Share the Success of Each Other's New Skill Learning
At break times we have heaps of fun; we get outside in the sun with our hats on, we can run around, play games, chat to our friends and hang out on the playground. We often learn and try out new things and experience success in other ways too. Break times should be a great positive time of the day where we can have fun and try something new.
Think about all the things that you can do to have fun in your life - what is it you enjoy? When we experience success, we're much more positive! Think about a time where you or a buddy have learnt a new skill at break time. Maybe you…
Swung the whole way across the monkey bars for the first time?
Scored another goal in soccer?
Won a running race with a buddy?
Bounced higher than before on the trampoline?
Maybe you made a new friend that you were nervous about doing?
Watch this video featuring the Kid President and think about the really great positive things you could say to share the success of a friend at break time.

Wear Your Hat Outside in Term 1 & 4
In Term 1 and 4 a sun hat is the law!
We have lots of space to run and play but not a lot of shade at our school, so we make sure that we are Sun Smart.
Why do we need to be Sun Smart in NZ?
What is different about the sun in our country compared to others?
Watch this video about being sun smart or check out this website with all the facts.
Talk to your friends about the things we do at Burnham School to be sun smart in the playground.
How do you keep yourself sun smart?
What could you remind your friends to do in the playground to be sun smart?
Where is a safe place to be outside during the sunniest time?
If you have time, make a poster that you can put by the door of your classroom to remind you of what to do before you go out into the sun!
Wear Your Shoes Outside
It’s really good fun to get into the sandpit or run around barefoot outside in summer, but sometimes we can stand on things that hurt our feet.
Think of a time where you might have been outside barefoot and hurt yourself. What do your shoes keep you safe from? Have you thought about…
Glass or sharp items?
Bees or other stinging bugs?
Accidentally kicking something hard?
When we are outside we should keep our feet safe. If you’ve ever had to use a sore foot, you will remember how difficult it can be to get around.
Watch this video together to see if you tie your shoelaces in the same way, or whether you can do it faster!
If you have time, either make a shoelace practice game for a junior class, or if you are in the juniors, practice tying shoelaces so you become a pro at break time!
