Stand tall when you get a certificate
Say the karakia and sing the national anthem together
Stand Tall When You Get a Certificate
Watch the video about Pride from Sesame Street to get the class excited!
Talk with the class about why they might get a certificate at our school assembly. Think about…
Sporting awards
REP certificates
Principal Awards
Other special awards or winning a raffle!
Watch the video of Haniera getting a certificate at assembly and see if you can spot some important things to do when you get a certificate.
As a class practice what getting a certificate looks like. Think about...
Standing tall keep your head up and calmly walk up to the stage
Use your right hand to firmly shake hands
Take the award with your left hand
Hold the certificate at belly button height and smile
Walk back to your seat quickly
Put your award onto the floor in front of you so it stays safe
If you have time, make a certificate and give it to a friend or to your teacher. Encourage them to follow the ideas above.
Say the Karakia and Sing the National Anthem Together
Discuss why knowing our national anthem is important. Chat about:
How it unites us as a country,
The links to whanaungatanga - we belong to this community,
The link to NZDF - our soldiers have fought for it
It is sung at sports games when NZ is represented.
Talk about how we stand tall and show confidence, hands out of pockets, standing still, singing clearly.
Learn the words and sign language for the anthem and sing each morning whilst practicing sitting and then standing quietly when directed.
Chat as a class or small group about why we learn and say karakia. Think about how it helps us to…
Focus the mind,
Express gratitude and mindfulness,
Show whanaungatanga - belonging to the group,
Honour our bilingual culture.
Practice the Karakia Whakamutunga, the National Anthem and Whakataka te Hau together as a class.
If you have time, video the class singing or saying karakia and give each other feedback.
