It has been another action packed week in Year 6! Our learners have been diving into fascinating topics across the curriculum - from ancient civilisations to the science of the human body. Here’s a glimpse of what they’ve been up to:
This week in Science, we have been investigating the impact of exercise on the heart. After predicting what might happen to heart rate during physical activity, they carried out practical experiments, collecting data and analysing results. The class were amazed to see how quickly the heart responds to even a short burst of exercise. Budding scientists are already making links to fitness and wellbeing.
We’ve travelled back in time to discover the chronology of the Maya civilisation. Pupils pieced together key events, placing them on a timeline to understand how the Maya fit into the wider story of world history. From ancient cities to cultural achievements, Year 6 have been asking excellent questions about this remarkable civilisation.
Our focus in Maths this week has been on multiplication and division strategies. The children have been tackling tricky problems with increasing confidence, exploring both mental and written methods. They’re developing flexibility in their number work, choosing the most efficient strategy for the task.
Linking to our Humanities topic, our English lessons have been enriched by the myths and folktales of the Maya people. Children have been reading, retelling, and acting out these traditional stories. Inspired by these tales, they are beginning to craft their own imaginative narratives, blending history with creativity.
We are continuing with our Haida Art work and the Zones of regulation in PSHE.
Thank you to all those parents who have signed up their children for the Year 6 residential. A gentle reminder that the deadline for the payment is the end of this week as we have to put the deposit down for the camp and pay for the buses.
Homework will be set on Sunday and will be due on the following Sunday.
Reading is expected to be completed daily and all students have the opportunity to change their books regularly. PO’s should be completed and signed daily so that the children have a reading record.
Spellings: These will be taught during the week and shared on the Google Classroom. Please encourage your child to practise these daily. This week we are looking at words with irregular spelling patterns.
Maths: These details are shared in google classroom and the children have their login details in their POs - MyMaths.
Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division B
White Rose maths - square and cubed numbers
What to wear:
Please ensure your child comes to school in their PE kit on PE days and swimming days, and regular school uniform on non PE days - their timetable has been stuck in their Personal Organiser and can also be found on the Google classroom.
On Mondays we have swimming, please ensure your child comes to school wearing their PE kit//uniform and brings their swim kit in a separate waterproof bag. Please make sure all swimming items are clearly labelled with your child's name.
Water Bottles and hats: Please label everything. Some children have the same water bottles and hats as others and they often get lost.
Email: We welcome communication from parents. If you would like to contact your child’s class teacher about any matter, then you can do so by writing a note in the PO, or for more complex queries please send an email to the school office, and this will be passed onto the correct member of staff. Please note, all emails should be sent via the primary office and not directly to teachers; this ensures that your query can be dealt with as quickly as possible.
Thank you for your continued support,
Mrs Bloodworth (Year Leader)

BSM has been running an exciting six week literacy programme called Lexonic for the past few years. It has been met with excitement and in turn proven to be a great success for our children.
Lexonic is a fast, focused and fun teaching programme which aims to improve decoding, vocabulary and comprehension skills. The programme has met with considerable success in the UK and in international schools, in terms of marked pupil progress in a short period of time. It has been designed for pupils with a wide range of abilities in order to ensure enrichment opportunities and challenge at different levels. Due to the great success, all Year 6 children will complete the programme before moving into Year 7. This means that your child may go through the programme in either Term 1, 2 or 3.
The sessions will take place within the school day and are at no additional cost.
Please visit the Lexonic website or arrange to speak to the LFL team for further information: https://www.lexonik.co.uk/
Should you have any questions about the support your child is being offered please do contact the Language for Learning team.

Please can we request that all children come to school on the day of their swimming lessons with the following equipment:
Swim Uniform in accordance with guidelines.
Swim hats for those with long hair. ALL hats must be secure on the head with no risk of slipping down over the face.
Goggles
Towel
Pool shoes (crocs or equivalent)
A waterproof bag to carry everything in.
Please see our Swimwear Guidelines on the website.
Please do not wear 'swim uniform' into school for hygiene reasons. Please do not wear an alternative gym or running kit for swimming lessons. It's important to use only 'Swim Uniform' and the recommendations listed above in the pool, as other fabrics become incredibly heavy when wet.
We have created WhatsApp groups for parents to know about urgent messages or reminders. Email will continue to be the main form of communication. Please see our BSM WhatsApp Groups Document for all the links. Please read the code of conduct carefully before joining any BSM WhatsApp groups.
