A week where our Year 1 children are starting to get into new routines and enjoying our ECA programme.
We have started our new book, ‘Lost in the Toy Museum’ We have enjoyed getting to know our characters and setting.
In science, we have examined the properties of materials and used descriptive words to discuss different materials.
In maths, we are looking at more than, less than and the same with amounts and digits.
Discovery learning has seen us exploring the places where we will have discovery learning and this will be on a three-week rotation.
In Art, we have looked at different tones and colours to sort our self-portrait painting.

Talk Time: Our weekly talk time helps develop an oracy skill. This week, we have focused on prepositions. Our sentence stems are, Where is…? It is…the…
Reading: We will collect books in each Sunday and give out new ones. Please keep books in your child’s bag so we can read with them in school. Reading should be recorded at home in the PO each day.
Phonics: The suffix s and es, a_e. We looked at the words house, our, where, were, they, says, are, ask, put, push, pull, full. You will receive an activity in your child’s homework book to support phonics each Monday and it is due in on a Sunday.
Maths: https://whiteroseeducation.com/1-minute-maths#download This app helps children build greater number confidence and fluency. It’s all about targeted practice in engaging, one-minute chunks! When you have done this each week with your child please make a note in your child’s PO.
Now books are being sent home, and we are trying to establish routines, children should be reading at home every day. This should be recorded in their PO.
Please name everything - such as water bottles, lunch boxes and all swimwear!

A short week in Year 1 but it has been jam packed!
We are now writing our own sentences about Traction Man and what he looks like and how he behaves.
In humanities this week, we talked about a toy from home, describing what it looked like, how we play with it and why we like it.
In maths, we have looked at counting backwards, one more and one less.
Discovery learning has seen us exploring the places where we will have discovery learning and this will be on a three-week rotation.
In Art we are starting our topic on self portraits and how we can draw ourselves.
Talk Time: Our talk time each week develops an oracy skill. This week we have focused on why we like or dislike something and giving a reason why using because.
Reading: We will collect books in each Sunday and give out new ones. Please keep books in your child’s bag so we can read with them in school. Reading should be recorded at home in the PO each day.
Phonics: oi, ay oy are the phonics sounds this week. We are learning the words: the, of, said, here, there, you, school. You will receive an activity in your child’s homework book to support phonics each Monday and it is due in on a Sunday.

A superb week has been had in Year 1. Thank you to all the parents who will attend our Meet and Greet tonight. For those who are unable to attend, the slides will be shared soon and if you require any information, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher via the Primary Office.
We have enjoyed becoming more familiar with the adventures of Traction Man! We are working hard on ordering events in the story.
In science this week, we explored our knowledge on materials and discussed wood, fabric, metal, glass and plastic - can you find items made of these at home?
In maths, we have set the foundation for counting accurately, marking off or moving items as we count.
Discovery learning has seen us exploring the places where we will have discovery learning and this will be on a three-week rotation.
In PSHE, we have talked about what happens when the colour monster goes to school.
Talk Time: Our talk time each week develops an oracy skill. This week we have focused on using body language to show we can listen and using the sentence starters I can, we can and I can’t yet.
Reading: Teachers will be listening to children read this week. Reading books will be sent home soon. We will collect books in each Sunday and give out new ones. Please keep books in your child’s bag so we can read with them in school. Reading should be recorded at home in the PO each day.
Phonics: tch, ve, and ai are the phonics sounds this week. We are learning the words: love, some, come, was, his, is, has, one, once, friend, your. From next week, you will receive an activity in your child’s homework book to support phonics.

We have loved welcoming the children into school this week, and we would like to welcome our new children and their families! We have been so impressed with the children’s motivation, enthusiasm and how quickly they have settled into Year One!
Our main focus this week has been getting to know the children and establishing some routines, we will continue to do this in the coming weeks. The children have created some lovely artwork of their family. This will be on display in our Year One corridor, so do take a look on your next visit.
In PSHE lessons, we have looked at a book called ‘The Colour Monster’; which teaches children about the importance of sharing their feelings. Each morning, children will enter the classroom and self-register by showing us what monster they can relate to that day. In maths lessons, we have been looking at the concept of grouping various items by colour, size or type. Once grouped we counted the amount in each and compared group sizes. Do explore this with resources at home.
We will not be providing tasks for home as the children settle and learn new routines.
