This week in Phonics, the children have revisited the ‘s’ sound, focusing on recognising the sound and forming the letter correctly. We have also introduced the ‘a’ sound, encouraging children to listen carefully and identify words that begin with this sound. The children enjoyed suggesting their own ideas and exploring objects and pictures with the same initial sound. They have also been practising how to write the letter ‘a’, using a range of fun, hands-on activities to support correct formation.
In Mathematics, the children have been developing their number recognition and writing skills. They have enjoyed exploring numbers through a variety of sensory and creative activities, including writing numbers in sand, tracing numbers on each other’s backs, and painting numbers. These activities helped the children build confidence with number formation while keeping learning playful and engaging. All of this work contributed to creating a Number Booklet, which the children were very proud of.
In our library session, we have been reading A Little Bit Worried by Ciara Gavin and Tim Warnes. We talked about feelings such as worry and anxiety, what can make us feel worried, and how sharing our thoughts with others can help us feel better. The children enjoyed discussing the characters’ emotions and relating them to their own experiences.
The children enjoyed cooking a cheese and bean wrap together and we used this activity to talk about healthy eating. We discussed where foods come from, how some foods help our bodies grow strong and healthy, and the importance of trying a variety of foods. The children were encouraged to talk about what they like and dislike and how it feels to try something new. Many of the children were brilliant Risk-Taking Cats, showing confidence and curiosity by tasting foods they had not tried before.
In Music, the children have been enjoying learning the song “Elephants Have Wrinkles.” They practised humming and began to explore how to “sing in their heads,” helping to develop listening skills and musical awareness. We also had lots of fun with body percussion, using our hands, knees and other parts of our bodies to create different sounds and rhythms. In addition, the children were introduced to the sliding whistle, experimenting with how changing breath and movement can create high and low sounds. This session supported rhythm, coordination and expressive musical play.

We are always available at the gate for quick questions or to hear any information you would like to share about your child. Please speak to us if you have anything important to let us know.
Library: Our library sessions will take place on Tuesdays. Please ensure that books are returned on Tuesday mornings so your child can borrow a new one to enjoy at home.
Please note that we promote healthy eating, it is important that snack boxes contain healthy food and perhaps a small ‘treat.’
Correct uniform is to be worn by the children, please check the school website if you are unsure. FS1 children do not need a PE uniform.
We do require a change of clothes in a labeled bag in case of any accidents. This will remain in school instead of being sent home each day.
