They were all brilliantly behaved and did well walking there and back to school. On the way to the Souq, children mapped out the journey and recorded how much rubbish they saw and how many rubbish bins were located; this linked to our sustainability work.
While at the Souq, we had three different activities: Students learnt how to use a trundle wheel to measure the perimeter in a real life scenario. They had to measure and then add up their measurements - this was a little tricky as we had to use metres and centimetres.
Another activity was investigating where the fruit and vegetables in Spinneys traveled from. We used a tally chart to record this and used a map to identify which continent it originated and how far it had to come. We discussed the benefits (and cost) of buying local fruit and veg; this also links to our sustainability work. Our final activity was to review the access routes in and out of the souq. The children identified whether areas were accessible to all and what could be done to make them more accessible. This links to our awareness of diversity and inclusion: are all people included when visiting Souq Al Madina?
The children learnt lots with much of the queries and findings followed up in up and coming class work.
A huge thank you again to all the parents who gave up their morning to join us; we couldn’t have done it without you!
This week we will continue to use our book to support our writing. The focus this week will be on writing paragraphs that revise all of our skills including writing compound sentences and using varied sentence starts to make our writing informative and interesting,
This week, we will complete our work on measurement. The students will consolidate their addition and subtraction skills through adding and subtracting measurements. This will build on their work from our trip as they practise calculating the perimeter of a shape.
This week we will apply our learning about rocks and use a scientific enquiry to identify a mystery rock. We will be developing our scientific skills through this investigation by recording data, answering scientific questions and applying our knowledge.
Following on from our trip, we will reflect on the activities we took part in and think about how they link to our learning in humanities and the wider world. We will use the information we gathered on our trip and work together to reflect. These activities will help us as we start to look more at the past, present and future of BSM in our focus for Term 2.
We didn’t manage to complete our art last week so we will use our sketches from the previous lesson to create prints and practise using rollers to print our designs on to paper.
We will be identifying our writing targets. These will be formed from our previous writing targets and shared with the students. The lesson will focus on how targets help us to improve and how working towards these make us better.
Homework - Homework will be set on Sunday and will be due on the following Sunday. It will be shared through Google Classroom. Please use this to check homework schedules. You can leave a note for the teacher with feedback too.
In the Google Classroom, you will also find additional optional resources that can support your child’s learning.
Please note that if your child is finding the homework challenging, they should try to do what they can. The teacher will not be upset. The work that we set is similar to the work completed in class and should be accessible. If the work is easy and quick to complete, we do have additional activities that students can complete; these will not always be marked but they are available for your use.
Reading - Expected to be completed daily and all students have the opportunity to change their books regularly. Please note that we will continue to assess the children over the coming weeks which means that your child’s reading band may change. Your feedback in their PO is helpful; especially if they are finding a book challenging or too easy.
Spellings - This week spellings were given on Thursday and will be tested on Thursday.
Maths Passport - Please note that Y3 will not be starting Maths passport for the immediate future. We will notify you when this will start and what will be required.
Homework will be set through Google Classroom. Please join your child’s Google Classroom, either by using this code or by clicking on the invitation email they will receive. Please let us know if you have any problems with gaining access. Your child will receive their logins and passwords in their computing lessons and these will be added to their personal organisers. Homework will be set on a Sunday and will be due the following Sunday.

What to wear:
PE Days: Please ensure your child comes to school in their PE kit on PE days and swimming days, and regular school uniform on non PE days - their timetable has been stuck in their Personal Organiser and can also be found on the Google classroom.
Swimming: On Tuesday we have swimming, please ensure your child comes to school wearing their PE kit, and brings their swim kit in a separate waterproof bag. Please make sure all swimming items are clearly labelled with your child's name.
Water Bottles and hats: Please label everything. Some children have the same water bottles and hats as others and they often get lost.
Medical and dietary needs: Please check that the school has up to date information on any medical or dietary requirements. We will be cooking in some of our lessons and we want to make sure that we accommodate everyone's needs.
Email: We welcome communication from parents. If you would like to contact your child’s class teacher about any matter, then you can do so by writing a note in the PO, or for more complex queries please send an email to the school office, and this will be passed onto the correct member of staff. Please note, all emails should be sent via the primary office and not directly to teachers; this ensures that your query can be dealt with as quickly as possible.
Thank you for your continued support, and please contact us if you have any queries or concerns.
Please click here for the Y3 Curriculum Newsletter for Term 2
If your child is unwell, leaving early or coming late please complete the Absence Form and the class teacher will be informed.
Please can we request that all children come to school on the day of their swimming lessons with the following equipment:
Swim Uniform in accordance with guidelines.
Swim hats for those with long hair. ALL hats must be secure on the head with no risk of slipping down over the face.
Goggles
Towel
Pool shoes (crocs or equivalent)
A waterproof bag to carry everything in.
Please see our Swimwear Guidelines on the website.
Please do not wear 'swim uniform' into school for hygiene reasons. Please do not wear an alternative gym or running kit for swimming lessons. It's important to use only 'Swim Uniform' and the recommendations listed above in the pool, as other fabrics become incredibly heavy when wet.
We have created WhatsApp groups for parents to know about urgent messages or reminders. Email will continue to be the main form of communication. Please see our BSM WhatsApp Groups Document for all the links. Please read the code of conduct carefully before joining any BSM WhatsApp groups.
Welcome to week 7 of Year 3!
In PSHE this week, we thought about friendships and what a good friend is. We also thought about the qualities of a good friend.
In Maths this week, we are learning to add numbers crossing the 10 or 100. This means that you may have to partition a number and use your knowledge of number bonds to 10 to help you.
In Art we created our portraits of ourselves as pharaohs using papyrus style paper, oil plates and some additional touches. The effects look really great!
