We are having such a lovely time in FS2! The children had a visit from the nurse last week who checked their hand washing skills! The children were shown how easily germs spread and the best way to wash our hands - back, front and between fingers. Percy the Toucan shone some ultra violet light on our hands which showed up the pretend germs! We continued to talk about ways in which we can stay healthy such as drinking water, getting lots of sleep and eating healthy food.
We also started this week with a visit from Dr Tamara who is a dentist and orthodontist. She and her assistant talked about the importance of oral hygiene and the correct way to brush our teeth. They kindly brought in bags of treats for the children too - which included a colouring book and toothpaste!!
These special visits are really helpful as our corridor is full of doctor, dental, optician and vet role play areas! The children are now able to use the experiences and the vocabulary learnt, and apply this in their pretend play.
This week we continued our structured Phonics, English and Maths sessions.
Our Monster Phonics scheme introduces the children to groups of letters each week.
We continue with the Black Cat letters!
The children were introduced to the sounds ‘e’ and ‘u’ and ‘r’. We covered the sight words : ‘can, got, on, get, not, cat, dog.’
The children were encouraged to record and practice these letters and write simple sentences as a challenge.
We will place some simple songs and videos in the Google classroom folders to support extra practice at home.
In Maths we have started to look at patterns. We made repeating patterns using our hands, legs and feet! The children had fun making their own repeating patterns during Discovery Learning using the resources available in the classroom, from bricks to pegs and even dinosaurs!
In Art the children have used their maths skills to paint patterns or use collage to create a pattern. We read a story called “Jolly Olly Octopus” by Tony Mitton and then created our own octopus with repeated patterns on each tentacle!
In Oracy we are developing confidence using descriptive vocabulary. The children have been encouraged to use their sense of touch this week. Some mysterious objects and substances were hidden under a cloth! The children used a range of vocabulary to describe what they could feel e.g something cold/ squishy/ hard/ smooth. This is a simple game which you could do at home too.
As usual we will upload suggested support activities onto the Google Classroom.
Teachers have loved meeting parents for Focus Child Meetings. Please remember you will be notified of these via an email from the Primary Office. Please could you complete the questionnaire given to your child - they will talk about their responses in front of the class during their special focus week. They can also bring in a special item from home for a ‘show and tell’ session during their focus week.
Please note that the Blue EYFS Gate opens at 7:10 am and closes promptly at 7:30 am. Punctuality is very important, as FS2 children begin structured phonics and maths sessions during this time.
Parents must wear their school badges with red lanyard on site at all times.
PE is on a Tuesday (children wear their PE clothes to school all day).
Swimming is on a Thursday (again children wear their PE clothes all day). Please bring in swim wear, towels and ‘crocs’ type shoes in a small bag. Swim hats for long hair please. Goggles are optional.
Correct uniform is to be worn by the children, please check the school website if you are unsure. However, we accept simple alternatives in the first weeks of the year especially with PE and swimming kits. Please speak to a teacher if you have any worries.
House colours for PE t-shirts are sent via the Parent Portal. Ruwi is Red, Yitti is Yellow, Ghubra is Green and Bowsher is Blue.
Please can we remind you to label all snack boxes, water bottles and other items that children bring into school, this prevents any upset when children mix up their belongings with others.
Every child should bring a bottle of water every day. We are able to support them with refilling if they need more at any time. Juices and other drinks are not necessary at school - but can be given as a supplement inside their lunch box if you so wish.
If you are still experiencing problems with the Google Classroom please let the Primary Office know and we will endeavour to support you.
The FS2 timetables are uploaded into a folder on each Google Classroom.
We will use the Google Classroom for extra messages from class teachers and upload photographs of special occasions for you to enjoy.
During the course of the year, we will also upload optional activity packs and resources to use at home.
Our FS2 children are doing so well with their structured lessons! Wow - super sitting, super listening and super motivation! All mixed in with lots of great indoor and outdoor play!
Our book this week was called ‘Carla’s Sandwich’. The story is about a young girl who makes very interesting sandwiches! The storyline celebrates differences, uniqueness and creativity - which are three things we constantly promote in our EYFS provision.
This week we continued our structured Phonics, English and Maths sessions. Our Monster Phonics scheme introduces the children to groups of letters each week. We are continuing with the Black Cat letters!
The children were introduced to the sounds ‘o’ and ‘c’ and ‘k’. We also introduced our first digraph ck’. We covered the sight words ‘to’ ‘into’ ‘go’ no’ ‘the’.
The children were encouraged to record and practice these letters and write simple sentences as a challenge. We will place some simple songs and videos in the Google classroom folders to support extra practice at home.
There will be a folder added on the Google classroom marked ‘letter formation’ with worksheets that you can print out to support letter formation of the letters learnt so far.
In maths we have been doing some work to support the concept of size. We are using structured vocabulary and scaffolded sentences e.g it is bigger than, it is smaller than, it is the same as, it is taller than, is shorter than.
In Art the children have been drawing sandwiches and making paper plate meals. Within this we have also introduced the concept of ‘collage’ work where the children chose materials to create a more unique plate of food.
Focus children weeks are starting! As parents you will be informed via email when your child has a special focus week at school. You will also receive an appointment for a parent meeting to discuss their progress. Your child will bring home a questionnaire to complete with you - please hand this back to the class teacher when it is completed.
Parents must wear their school badges with red lanyard on site at all times.
PE is on a Tuesday (children wear their PE clothes to school all day).

Finally - PLEASE support us and do not allow your children to bring in any toys from home.
Toys are distracting and can get lost easily. However, your child will be allowed to bring in a special object from home during their focus week - so that is something they can look forward to!
The children have had another great week. We have had lots of interesting discussions about the 4 things we all need to grow healthily - exercise, sleep, healthy foods and lots of water. We also talked about keeping ourselves clean and brushing our teeth regularly. This all links to our role play areas where the children can see models of teeth, skeletons and doctors surgery information. We are also looking forward to meeting Nurse Kay next week who will be demonstrating hand washing techniques with the help of Percy the Toucan!!
This week we continued our structured Phonics, English and Maths sessions. Our Monster Phonics scheme introduces the children to groups of letters each week. We start with the Black Cat letters!
The children were introduced to the sounds ‘m’ and ‘d’ and ‘g’. We also covered the sight words ‘and’ ‘dad’ ‘am’.
The children were encouraged to record and practice these letters and write simple sentences as a challenge.
We will place some simple songs and videos in the Google classroom folders to support extra practice at home.
In maths we have been doing some work to support writing numbers to 10. Children are using sand trays/ paint/ play dough to form numbers as well as writing them on white boards and in their books. We also worked on solving problems - items were sorted into groups and the children had to guess the way in which they had been sorted e.g colour/size/texture.
In Art the children have been painting and drawing independently. We have inspired them to use colour mixing skills by reading Mouse Paint by Ellen Walsh.
Thanks to those who attended the EYFS Learning Ladders presentation on Tuesday this week. We will share the slides with you soon. All new parents will have received their log in details (to the parent email).
If you are experiencing problems please let the Primary Office know and we will endeavour to support you.

The Language for Learning team would like to welcome you back to the new school year.
We are looking forward to supporting your children’s language learning this term. We have several groups taking place this term to support children with language acquisition which included: Speaking and Listening, Reading, Writing and Vocabulary. Should your child be invited to a small group intervention you will be notified via the Primary Office.
Alongside small, regular groups, in some year groups the team will be supporting children with their curriculum for a unit of work or specific activity. This work will usually be completed in class, however sometimes work may lend itself to being completed out of the classroom, in order to support further with a specific language focus.
We also have a website with Tips and Tricks for you and your children to use at home. Click here for the Language for Learning website.
Should you have any questions about the support your child is being offered please do contact the Language for Learning team.

An amazing week in FS2! What a super group of children and parents!
The children are really responding well to all our routines and expectations. They have all settled extremely well and we are all so happy together.
We have enjoyed some lovely stories this week including ‘The Colour Monster’ and ‘The Colour Monster Goes to School’. These wonderful books support children's understanding about feelings, associating them with colours they might know. The books support emotional development through expressing emotions and feelings and they help children understand what it is they feel, and possibly why. The children had fun painting their colour monsters in the colour associated with how they were feeling that day. We had lots of relaxed green and happy yellow monsters as well as some mixed up ones that were still working out how they were feeling!
In class we have continued some simple baseline assessments which involve observing children within the indoor and outdoor provision. Wellbeing is paramount in EYFS and we are continuing to observe children’s engagement in structured sessions and Discovery Learning opportunities.
We have already started our Monster Phonics program!! The children have been introduced to the Black Cats and Tricky Witch. They have covered the letters s,a,t and p. They have also been practising the sight words - a, at, as
The children are also working together as a team to achieve a class reward at the end of the week. We are developing their understanding of the school Learning Ethos by using a Collaborative Meerkat to demonstrate this valuable attribute.
We will also be inviting you to Focus Child Parent meetings once the children are completely settled within the FS2 provision
You have been sent Google Classroom invitations to your child's school email account. This will provide you with the class timetable and class list of names. We will be uploading photographs and activities during the course of the year - so please join the classroom as soon as possible.

The children are settling well into their new classroom environments and loving the indoor and outdoor provision.
The FS2 team will always be there at the gate to welcome and greet each child. Please be aware that the Blue EYFS Gate opens at 7.10am and will close at 7.30am. Being punctual is essential each day as the FS2 children do structured phonics and maths sessions at this time.

PE house colours are on your Parent Portal but in the meantime, if there is any problem, wear a white T shirt. Children should come into school wearing their PE kits and trainers on Tuesdays and again on Thursday when they have swimming.
Your child should wear their PE kit and bring in a Swimming Kit Bag on Thursdays Please include appropriate swimming wear from the school uniform shop if possible but if not - something in a plain dark colour, a towel and ‘croc’ type shoes. Swim caps are required for long hair please.
Please note that we promote healthy eating, it is important that snack boxes contain healthy food and perhaps a small ‘treat.’ The school has a NO NUT policy so please no nutella or any other nut product.
Please remember to send your child to school with a spare set of labeled clothes in a labeled bag. We will keep this at school instead of sending it home each day.
Correct uniform is to be worn by the children, please check the school website if you are unsure. No jewellery please as this is a health and safety issue throughout our setting of play and exploration.
Big trolley bags on wheels are not appropriate for our setting due to the number of steps. If your child wishes to bring a bag - a small rucksack is sufficient.
Please do not hesitate to contact the Primary Office if you have any questions or queries.
