We have had a lovely week looking at non fiction books about transport.
The children have been using comparative language (longer shorter higher) which ties into our maths work on measuring and last week's phonics digraph ‘er’.
This week we introduced our first trigraph ‘igh’. How exciting!
The children learnt that three letters joined together to make one sound is called a ‘trigraph’. They are used to reading ‘digraphs’ which are two letters joined together to make one sound. The monster ‘igh’ sound is used in lots of spellings and we made a big list of rhyming words e.g light/night/right. The words were covered through the traditional tale of Rapunzel. We focused on developing blending and segmenting skills in all activities.
Every child has their latest phonic assessments inside the PO this week and we encourage you to support us by consolidating any gaps in knowledge - whether with sounds or sight words. Remember to work on the areas NOT covered in green highlighter pen. The children are really starting to gain confidence in their reading skills and consolidation at home is so important. The next assessment will take place soon so it would be amazing to see some of the gaps being covered at home too.
This week our HFWs were: like, when, what, by, little.
In Maths, we have been consolidating number bonds to 10 through songs and games. We have recapped doubles to 10 and how to recognise them, alongside looking at odd and even numbers to 10. It’s been great to spot numbers in stories and investigate if it is an odd or even number, and what number we would get if we doubled it.
EYFS are calling this week - Mothers Week!
All mums are invited into school on a particular day/time. We would like to pamper and spoil the most important people in our lives!
The invitation will be posted via your class whatsapp - it would be great to spread out the numbers across the 2 time slots. Please let your teacher know if you can’t make the allocated day - we will not leave you out!

Phonics - Every child has their latest phonic assessments inside the PO this week and we encourage you to support us by consolidating any gaps in knowledge - whether with sounds or sight words. Remember to work on the areas NOT covered in green highlighter pen.
Maths Passport - We have also sent home maths passport assessments. This is a new whole school initiative which focuses on mental maths development. Just like the phonics assessment above, you will see what your child needs to practise at home. Things NOT fully dated or highlighted in green need consolidation.
PE is on a Tuesday (children wear their PE clothes to school all day).
Swimming is on a Thursday (again children wear their PE clothes all day). Please bring in swim wear, towels and ‘crocs’ type shoes in a small bag. Swim hats for long hair please. Goggles are optional.
Correct uniform is to be worn by the children, please check the school website if you are unsure. However, we accept simple alternatives in the first weeks of the year especially with PE and swimming kits. Please speak to a teacher if you have any worries.
House colours for PE t-shirts are sent via the Parent Portal. Ruwi is Red, Yitti is Yellow, Ghubra is Green and Bowsher is Blue.
Please can we remind you to label all snack boxes, water bottles and other items that children bring into school, this prevents any upset when children mix up their belongings with others.
Every child should bring a bottle of water every day. We are able to support them with refilling if they need more at any time. Juices and other drinks are not necessary at school - but can be given as a supplement inside their lunch box if you so wish.
If you are still experiencing problems with the Google Classroom please let the Primary Office know and we will endeavour to support you.
The FS2 timetables are uploaded into a folder on each Google Classroom.
We will use the Google Classroom for extra messages from class teachers and upload photographs of special occasions for you to enjoy.
During the course of the year, we will also upload optional activity packs and resources to use at home.
Please note that the Blue EYFS Gate opens at 7:10 am and closes promptly at 7:30 am. Punctuality is very important, as FS2 children begin structured phonics and maths sessions during this time.
Parents must wear their school badges with red lanyard on site at all times.
Please click here for the FS2 Curriculum Newsletter for Term 2
If your child is unwell, leaving early or coming late please complete the Absence Form and the class teacher will be informed.
Please can we request that all children come to school on the day of their swimming lessons with the following equipment:
Swim Uniform in accordance with guidelines.
Swim hats for those with long hair. ALL hats must be secure on the head with no risk of slipping down over the face.
Goggles
Towel
Pool shoes (crocs or equivalent)
A waterproof bag to carry everything in.
Please see our Swimwear Guidelines on the website.
Please do not wear 'swim uniform' into school for hygiene reasons. Please do not wear an alternative gym or running kit for swimming lessons. It's important to use only 'Swim Uniform' and the recommendations listed above in the pool, as other fabrics become incredibly heavy when wet.
We have WhatsApp groups for parents to know about urgent messages or reminders. Email is the main form of communication. Please see our BSM WhatsApp Groups Document for all the links. Please read the code of conduct carefully before joining any BSM WhatsApp groups.
