In English, we have finished reading our text Coming to England. We have been looking carefully at the features of autobiographies and preparing to write our own anecdotes next week.
In Art, we have now completed our unit of study on Sandra Silberzweig. The children have had a wonderful time learning about the artist’s life and the work she created. Moreover, they enjoyed creating their own pieces based on her styles and techniques.
In Maths, we continued practising the skill of rounding to complete our Place Value topic. Next week we will move on to addition and subtraction.
In Science we created our own sundials! We used them to investigate whether they could accurately tell the time. We needed to point the gnomon to true north and read the position of the shadow. Try it at home!
In PSHE, as part of our E-safety unit, we have been learning about AI and algorithms. We also had to decide if images were real or AI-generated. It made us think carefully about thinking critically about what we see online.
Reading - Please read for 20 minutes per day and record this in your P.O. Please record the book title and page numbers and ask an adult to sign when they have either heard you read or have discussed your reading with you.
Spelling - Revise the words you learned on Sunday ready to be tested on Thursday. These are on the google classroom for you to practise. In your homework book, write 5 sentences including 5 of your spelling words. Each sentence must include a fronted adverbial.
Maths - Please refer to the maths group Google Classroom. This is due on Sunday.
Just a reminder:
On Sundays and Tuesdays the children in Year 5 have PE lessons and can wear their PE to school. They must bring their uniform to change into after their PE lesson.
On Wednesday, they have swimming.
Headphones:
This year we will take part in activities that require the students to use headphones with their devices. Whilst we do have a stock the children can borrow, if your child already has headphones, they can bring them into school with their device. You can also purchase inexpensive headphones at many outlets in Muscat. Please note that we do not encourage the children to bring valuable headphones from home. We recommend wired overhead headphones.
The U11 BSME Games will be held in Muscat in February 2026. For further information about the BSME Games please read this letter from Mr O’Sullivan.
In Science, we have been learning all about how and why we experience day and night on Earth. We have been looking at globes and using light sources to mimic the sun’s rays bouncing off the Earth’s surface whilst revisiting the anti-clockwise rotation of the Earth on its axis.
In Humanities, we enjoyed reading a story called ‘Bird Man’ which is based in prehistoric Oman. The children enjoyed learning from the story and discussing elements that they recognised in terms of vocabulary, places and cultural rituals mentioned.
In English, we have continued reading our text Coming to England. This week we have been learning about anecdotes and thinking of our own. We also looked carefully at the features of autobiographies.
In Maths, we have continued with our learning about place value. The children have been ordering, comparing, rounding and expressing the values of numbers in different ways.
In Art, we continued working on our pieces inspired by Sandra Silberzweig. The children explored patterns and shapes, selected their best examples and will now start adding colour to their work using colouring pencils or pastels.

It’s been another busy week in Year 5. We’ve had a wonderful week and are really impressed with how the children have settled into the term.
In English, we have continued to read our autobiographical book, Coming to England. We have looked at the features of informal letters and have used a letter from Marmie to Floella and her sister to write our own persuasive letter in reply.
In humanities, we have been learning all about the history of Oman. We used this new knowledge to create a historical timeline using our knowledge of chronological sequencing, labelling, and caption writing.
In maths, we have continued with our place value learning and have been partitioning numbers up to 1,000,000
In science, we have been learning about the heliocentric and geocentric models of the solar system. The children learned about what people from different cultures around the world thought at different times in history and discussed why they may have had these ideas and how these ideas shaped what we think today.
In art, we started to practise designing pieces that mirror the work by Sandra Silberzweig. The children have had a lovely time exploring patterns and shapes.
The Language for Learning team would like to welcome you back to the new school year.
We are looking forward to supporting your children’s language learning this term. We have several groups taking place this term to support children with language acquisition which included: Speaking and Listening, Reading, Writing and Vocabulary. Should your child be invited to a small group intervention you will be notified via the Primary Office.
Alongside small, regular groups, in some year groups the team will be supporting children with their curriculum for a unit of work or specific activity. This work will usually be completed in class, however sometimes work may lend itself to being completed out of the classroom, in order to support further with a specific language focus.
We also have a website with Tips and Tricks for you and your children to use at home. Click here for the Language for Learning website.
Should you have any questions about the support your child is being offered please do contact the Language for Learning team.

In science, we have learned the key vocabulary to do with space and started identifying some of the key features of the planets in our solar system.
In humanities, we learned about human and physical geographical features and identified ones in Oman, creating a map showing the geographical features of Oman.
In maths, we have continued with our learning about place value. The children have been learning about powers of 10 and finding more or less of given numbers.
In English, we have continued to read our autobiographical book, Coming to England. We have been focusing on push and pull factors of migration and included drama to help us understand how the characters would be feeling. Then, we analysed informal persuasive letters, identifying the features.
In art, we created a sketch page about the artist Sandra Silberzweig. We will be recreating work based on her art in the coming weeks.

We have had a wonderful week this week in Year 5.
In science, the whole of Year 5 went into the Oryx Theatre to participate in an awe and wonder activity based on our new unit, Earth and Space. We shared what we already knew about the topic and what we wanted to discover in the coming weeks.
In humanities, we have started our Marhaba Oman unit where we began learning about Oman’s location in the region and world.
In maths, we have started our unit on place value. The children had lots of fun playing games whilst they learned about Roman numerals and we also covered the importance of digits to 1,000,000.
In English, we have started our unit called Coming to England. This is a famous autobiographical text written by Floella Benjamin. The children had a wonderful time learning about Floella and her home country, Trinidad. We worked on our summarising skills and wrote our own description of Floella’s home.
In art, we began our Sandra Silberzweig unit by studying her life and the work that she has become famous for.

First of all, welcome back to BSM. The Year 5 team have had a wonderful week getting to know the children and helping them make the best start in their classes. I would like to share a warm welcome to the new families that have joined the BSM community, too. All of the children have made an excellent start and have settled incredibly quickly. Thank you for supporting them with this; we understand that moving to a country and/or school is challenging.
This week has involved playing lots of ‘getting to know you’ activities. We have also been thinking about our happy places in the world and in school. The children discussed and shared their thoughts and feelings with their friends.
As part of our bring your own device programme, we have learned how to stay safe when using technology, especially the internet. We have discussed private information and how to be a responsible member of the Y5 BSM Community when online.
