Welcome to Week 6 in Year 4!
In English this week we have started our new book, ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter’ by Philip Pullman. We started by making predictions about the characters and plot, based on the evidence presented on the front cover. We also looked in detail at the character of Lila and made inferences about her personality. We then went on to look at the features of a letter in preparation for writing informal letters next week.
In Maths, we have been rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.
In Humanities, we have looked at what life was like for sailors on the explorers’ ships of the 15th century and in science, we made string telephones and discussed how sound can travel through solids.
In Art we painted the colour wheel, using primary colours to mix secondary and tertiary colours.
In PSHE, we have discussed our rights as children, the difference between a ‘right’ and a ‘want’ and how, with every right, there comes a responsibility.
Homework will be set on Sunday and will be due on the following Sunday. All instructions can be found on Google Classroom.
This week, your child has been given a homework book where written homework can be recorded from now on. Please ensure that homework is completed using a pencil.
Reading - Please read for 20 minutes per day and record this in your P.O. Please record the book title and page numbers and ask an adult to sign it . For this activity, your child should be reading their book from the reading room with a colour level.
Spelling - Spelling lessons are on Tuesday. Your child will receive their first words this week. They need to learn these in preparation for their test the following Tuesday.
Maths - please complete the Infinity Quiz based on number lines. All instructions on how to log in can be found on your child’s Google Classroom.
Humanities - Your child has been asked to research one of the explorers on the given list. Detailed instructions have been given on the Google Classroom. They should present their research using 2 pages of their homework book. They should think carefully about the arrangement of the double page and how the information can be presented in an attractive, eye-catching way., with a portrait of the explorer and a map of their route.
The children have been very excited to begin ECAs this week and are getting used to the new routine of where they have to go at the end of the school day. To help them remember, please can you fill in their Enrolled ECA's on page 2 of their POs? Many thanks for your help with this.
Just a reminder:
On Mondays and Wednesdays the children in Year 4 have PE lessons and can wear their PE to school. They must bring their uniform to change into after their PE lesson, this includes bringing their school shoes to change into after the PE lesson.
On Sunday, they have swimming and should wear their uniform to school, not their PE kit.
Please label all of your uniform, PE kit, swimming kit and water bottle
Please remember to sign up for the Parent Teacher Meetings being held on Sunday 12th October and Tuesday 28th October.
Please check that the school has up to date information on any medical or dietary requirements. We will be cooking in some of our lessons and we want to make sure that we accommodate everyone's needs.

Please can we request that all children come to school on the day of their swimming lessons with the following equipment:
Swim Uniform in accordance with guidelines.
Swim hats for those with long hair. ALL hats must be secure on the head with no risk of slipping down over the face.
Goggles
Towel
Pool shoes (crocs or equivalent)
A waterproof bag to carry everything in.
Please see our Swimwear Guidelines on the website.
Please do not wear 'swim uniform' into school for hygiene reasons. Please do not wear an alternative gym or running kit for swimming lessons. It's important to use only 'Swim Uniform' and the recommendations listed above in the pool, as other fabrics become incredibly heavy when wet.
We have created WhatsApp groups for parents to know about urgent messages or reminders. Email will continue to be the main form of communication. Please see our BSM WhatsApp Groups Document for all the links. Please read the code of conduct carefully before joining any BSM WhatsApp groups.
