After your test tile has been bisque-fired, you will continue your exploration.
a form of decoration made by scratching through a surface to reveal a lower layer of a contrasting color, typically done in plaster or stucco on walls, or in slip on ceramics before firing.
Tips for successful sgraffito:
Ensure the slip is leather-hard before scratching to avoid crumbling.
Use a variety of tools for different effects (needle tools, loop tools, brushes, combs, etc.).
Practice on test tiles before working on the final piece.
Consider the curvature of the vessel when planning designs.
Combine techniques for more complex and interesting results.
Work carefully, as sgraffito is generally irreversible.
Layered Color Sgraffito:
Apply multiple layers of colored slip, allowing each layer to dry before adding the next.
Scratch through the layers to reveal different colors, creating depth and visual interest.
Negative Space Sgraffito:
Cover the entire vessel with a dark slip.
Scratch away the background, leaving the design in the dark color.
This technique can create dramatic, silhouette-like imagery.
Textured Sgraffito:
Use various tools to create different textures and line qualities.
Combine smooth areas with heavily textured sections for contrast.
Gradient Sgraffito:
Apply a gradient of slip colors from top to bottom of the vessel.
Scratch through to reveal the underlying clay body, creating a unique effect as the background color changes.
Sgraffito with Underglaze Pencils:
Use underglaze pencils to draw detailed designs.
Cover with a contrasting slip and scratch through to reveal the underglaze drawing.
Mishima-Inspired Technique:
Carve designs into the leather-hard clay.
Fill the carved lines with colored slip.
Scrape away excess slip to leave color only in the carved areas.
Stencil Sgraffito:
Create or use pre-made stencils to achieve consistent repeated patterns.
Apply slip over the stencil, remove it, and refine the edges with sgraffito tools.
Sgraffito with Resist:
Apply wax resist or latex resist to create areas that resist slip.
Cover the entire piece with slip, then scratch through for added detail.
