We will develop original character concepts that balance aesthetic appeal with functional requirements for chia seed cultivation.
We will solve construction challenges through creative problem-solving and adaptation of techniques to meet our design needs.
We will create detailed technical drawings with accurate measurements and construction plans that guide our ceramic building process.
We will plan surface treatments strategically, distinguishing between areas for glazing and areas for chia seed growth.
We will construct hollow ceramic forms using the double pinch pot method while maintaining consistent ¼ inch wall thickness.
We will attach sculptural details and character features using score-and-slip methods that ensure elements remain secure through firing.
We will evaluate our work critically throughout the process, making adjustments that improve both visual appeal and functional success.
We will document our creative process through digital photography and written reflection that demonstrates our learning.
We will use ceramic tools safely and effectively while caring for shared studio equipment responsibly.
We will provide constructive feedback to peers using art vocabulary and supportive critique methods.
We will manage multi-week project timelines effectively, meeting deadlines while maintaining quality craftsmanship.
Sketch 3 different animal/character concepts in your sketchbook (no copyrighted characters or copying what someone else has already done, be creative!
Include front and side views for each concept
Consider pinch pot construction - what designs work with the shape of 2 pinch pots put together?
Plan texture vs. smooth areas - where will chia seeds grow?
Select your best concept and explain your choice
Get teacher approval on final design
Take a photo of your sketchbook work and submit on Google Classroom
2 lbs clay
Pinch pot tools and ribs
Scoring tools (fork, crosshatch tool)
Slip (clay + water mixture)
Texture tools (stamps, combs, found objects, carving tools)
Sponges and water containers
Plastic wrap and damp towels
Spray bottles for moisture control
Measuring tools (rulers, calipers)
Create 2 equal sized pinch pots
Maintain ¼ inch wall thickness throughout
Check measurements against your design plan
Keep rim even for joining to top piece
2. Join the 2 Pinch Pots to make a Hollow Form
Score both rim surfaces with crosshatch pattern
Apply slip generously to both scored surfaces
Align pieces carefully and press together firmly
Work around entire circumference pressing seam
Add reinforcement coil and smooth slightly
Use the wooden paddles to even out
1. Basic Character Shaping
Refine overall form to match design concept
2. Add major character features - ears, tail, legs, etc.
Use score and slip technique for all attachments
Focus on proportions and character personality
Ensure structural stability and balance
Check against original design for accuracy
3. Facial Features & Details
Add eyes, nose, mouth with proper placement and proportion
Use proper attachment technique - score, slip, blend
Add character-specific details - spots, stripes, markings
4. Add a Small Watering Hole
This is where you can add water to your Chia Pet to water the seeds later. (Like the ones you see on the backs of most Chia Pets
Texture Application
Work when clay is leather-hard for best results
Focus on chia-growing areas - top surfaces, gentle slopes
Leave designated smooth areas completely untextured for glazing
Add secondary textures and refinement details
2. Final Refinement
Complete all remaining details and character elements
Clean up rough edges and imperfections
Check structural integrity - seams, attachments, balance
3. Take "Bisque Ready" Photos
Turn in photos on Google Classroom
4. Place in the Kiln Room
Leave your finished artwork on the Bisque Fire Rack in the kiln room to dry and be fired
1. As you glaze... Record your glazes on the "Glaze Plan" sheet
Add all of the information asked for and where you are adding them
Add 3 solid layers of glaze, allowing for it to dry completely before adding the next
2. Add Glaze to areas you will NOT have chia seeds growing
Do NOT glaze the bottom of your piece (whatever sits on the table)
3. Clean up Drips or Mistakes
If you get glaze somewhere it shouldn't be, wipe clean with a wet sponge (over/by the sink)
Consistent ¼ inch wall thickness throughout
Strong, well-blended seams and attachments
Proper scoring and slip technique for all joins
Balanced, stable form that sits properly
Appropriate texture depth for seed retention (⅛ to ¼ inch deep)
Clear separation between textured and smooth areas
Visual balance and character personality
Clean, professional finish on glazed areas
All chia-growing areas completely free of glaze
Texture patterns that will hold seeds effectively
Stable base that won't tip when seeds are growing
Proper size for handling and care
