Students will create a themed slab-built ceramic vessel using hand-building techniques to add high relief or full round elements.
Each step is an opportunity to create a section in your sketchbook with research/brainstorming/visual planning etc...
It helps to find an artist to take inspiration from (the style and feel of the work is the important part, so it doesn't even have to be a ceramic artist). A have gathered a few artists whose work fits this project, see below.
Take a look at the ceramic artists below, check out this awesome page for Contemporary Sculpture Artists or my "Discover Artists" page
Take a look at my "Artwork Themes Page" (or the docs to the right), choose 1 or 2 to play with. Having a theme can give you a direction to look for ideas, or can unify your ideas and give them a deeper meaning.
List of Art Themes
Quick List of Themes
Slab Built: Choose the form you want to work with (bowl, vase, lidded container, etc..)
Hand Building Elements: The items/characters/details you add to your work should be created with your hands, they should be added as "high relief" (coming away from the background a lot) or even completely "full round"
Underglazes: You will be using underglazes, which can be applied to un-fired clay, are color mixable and are more "painterly"
Important Note: All imagery in your portrait should be school appropriate. That means that there are no guns, knives, blood, profanity, or sexual content allowed in your project.
Images of Everything Else
If you can find the item in the real world, you should take a picture of it (even if it is at the store, or at a friend's/relative's house).
But if you can't find take a photo of the item, then you will need to use your imagination and draw it in your sketchbook. You can look at references online, but DO NOT COPY them exactly. Find several images and then combine them into your own version.
If it is an animal, find a live stream and then draw from the footage.
