Common Misconceptions

Over the course of LGBTQ+ history, there have been many misconceptions regarding the community, on how they act, who they are and how they feel. For this article, I interviewed/made a poll on Instagram asking people for assumptions that society makes about the LGBTQ+ community. Here are some of the responses I received:
Gay men are girly + HAVE to love feminine things
LGBTQ+ people don’t exist within the BIPOC community
The owe their sexuality to others/others are "entitled" to know that person's sexuality
The LGBTQ+ community is too loud
Members in the LGBTQ+ community are after everyone
ex: Your lesbian friend is “automatically” into you because you identify as a girl
With these responses, I would like to add that all of these are assumptions that hurt the community and how we are supposed to act. It’s not always easy to come to terms with who you like when society has all these stereotypes about you. It's so important to bring light to all the hate and discrimination that people have faced for simply just being a part of the community. Through all this negativity and assumptions, we are proud to be who we are and we choose to ignore the assumptions and be who we wanna be.
