Our magazine Not Quite Wednesday started from a broken dream of starting a band.
Our advisory meets every day after school for homework club. After our usual discussions of Roblox and what happened during the school day, Perla, our NQW Features Editor, mentioned that they wanted to create a band together. Everyone in the group agreed, and we decided to title the band Not Quite Wednesday. The name was based on Perla’s favorite day of the week (because of them having their favorite classes that day and it nearing the weekend). We all loved the title because it showed that although there might be hardships ahead, there’s always something to look forward to.
A name representing hope and anticipating the future that lies ahead.
After a bit of thought and emailing BACS teachers, we had the somber realization that our new music group would not be possible due to a lack of a faculty advisor. We had believed all hope was lost for leaving our mark on Blackstone — that was, until one night when V texted our group chat.
“We should start a magazine,” she typed to her eggs.
And that’s where it all began.
From there, we decided to pass on the name of our former, nonexistent band onto our new creation. Although there was a lot of debate on the name from V, she finally agreed to Not Quite Wednesday. She even ended up really liking it. Like, really really liking it. Like genuinely screaming over it. We all know how that goes.
We decided NQW will include plenty of different topics with a monthly theme surrounding them. We wanted to contribute something meaningful and interesting to Blackstone, where teachers and students alike will have a chance to get some information on events happening in pop culture, activism, and BACS itself. We knew that commentary on diverse topics would be necessary, as there are many different interests among readers in the school.
We also wanted to make each issue release on the first Tuesday of the month. We did this to show that even though it’s not quite Wednesday, it’ll still be a good day.
There’s always something to look forward to; you just have to find out what it is.
We’re so proud of what we’ve all made and are so excited to share it with our BACS family.
Kisses,
Layla Charron
