Oct. 22 - 26

We had a week full of so many exciting events! From our guest author, Witchy Poo, to learning about force by building catapults, to a Lego Work Activity with our 1st grade buddies, to exploring the inside of a real peach in honor of James!! Wow, not bad for a long week full of rainy days!!

objectives for the week:

WORDS OF THE WEEK: simulation, duplication, equivalent, personal

Our novel study of James and the Giant Peach will be coming to an end. We will focus on identifying the important details in text and have a comprehensive comprehension test over the book. Does your child know their full name, birthdate, address, and the city and state in which they were born? All these things are proper nouns and we will personalize our own learning this week in grammar. Which fractions are the same? In math, it's all about equivalent fractions this week. In science, Mystery Doug will help us explore the different types of energy. And finally, social studies will be the talk of the week as we start our Pilgrims study. This study is a simulation of the first year at Plymouth Colony. The purpose of this unit is to give students a closer look at the struggle that was part of everyday life in Plymouth Colony!

News:

  • An enormous "thank you" to Mrs. Linda Garduno, Caleb Tracy's grandmother. She is the author of Witchy Poo and joined our class last Wednesday for a very special reading of her book and autograph session.
  • We will be starting our Pilgrims unit, so you might want start thinking about getting your child's attire made, purchased, or borrowed for our Thanksgiving Feast. Students can come dressed as Pilgrims. The 3rd grade teachers will be Native Americans.
  • "Book Character Dress Up Day" is Oct. 31st; right around the corner. I can't wait!! Please review the information below:

1. The character your child chooses to be, your child should know about. Your child should be "an expert of sorts" on that character when questioned.

2. Please be creative and remember that homemade, preowned items, recycled things, etc. make great character outfits and their attire doesn't need to be a "purchased costume". Mine isn't!

3. The character you choose might look like they have a mask, weapon, or blood and guts, however, for your child's day at school, none of those things can be worn or part of their Book Character Dress Up Day.

4. Be mindful that your child will still have recess, brain break, and possibly P.E., so proper shoes need to be worn.
