Map suitability
Long distance or middle distance, depending upon the parts of the map used.
Land Manager:
Parks Victoria
Access issues:
Various sections of the original map have been fenced and alienated from public use over time. These are reflected in the 2016 update.
Assembly sites:
1- Butts Reserve. Good parking, a shelter and toilets makes this a favoured start. Its favoured by other groups as well so you will need to check with other bookings. One disadvantage is the unavoidable climb from the start to any terrain.
2- Watersons Rd. Good access to the west side of the mountain. Preferred by those seeking the greatest dollop of granite with the least climb.
3- Lawrence St. Suitable for long distance style setting on the east side of the mount. Closest to the coffee shops of Maldon.
4- South Parkins Reef Rd. Access to south of the mount. Less useful with the fencing of a large block of land to the east.
5- Mount Back Road. Good for southern granite, but limited parking and possibly inaccessible in wet weather. Suitable only for small events.
Safety Issues:
Some cliffs in the south of the map. In wet weather rock can be slippery. Studded shoes advisable in wet conditions.
Map status:
Mapped in 1997 by Alex Tarr. Since then there has been a series of updates, correcting scale inaccuracies from the photogrammetry, track changes and fencing of private land (2010, 2012, 2016, 2017). Despite its age the map is very useable.
