Map suitability
World class long or middle distance terrain on a 25 square kilometre map!
Various sections have been used with different map names over the years- Mount Kooyoora, Kooyoora Spur, Crystal Mine, Melvilles Caves, Hope Creek, Bermuda Triangle. See third map in other column.
Land Manager:
Parks Victoria
Access issues:
NO parking within the park boundary. Bussing is the only option for most assembly areas.
Dogs not allowed outside the Melvilles Caves Rd.
Dja Dja Wurrung consultation. Sensitivity over heritage sites. These sites are marked on the map with hidden symbols that can be revealed for course setters. High priority heritage sites should not be used as control sites.
Indigenous recognition statement to be used on maps for all events.
The areas to the east of Breakneck track and to the west of Leech's Track are reference areas and should not be entered.
Blocks of private land on the map should not be entered without permission. Permission has not been given for some years.
Assemblies- click to enlarge
Assembly sites:
Finding assembly areas at Kooyoora has become more difficult in recent years. Private land has become unavailable. The main campground is no longer allowed for parking and events. Parking alongside tracks has been more restricted in recent permits. Any future major event here will probably require bussing of competitors.
1. Lower Picnic Ground. No longer available for parking.
2. Melvilles Cave parking area. No longer available for parking
3. Campground. No longer available for parking
4. Kingower Wedderburn Road. Useable if cars park on the east side of the road before the park boundary. Have cars enter via Kurting and exit towards Kingower to avoid congestion.
5. Private land used by Yarra Valley Orienteers with permission of the landowner. Seek permission if you wish to use this.
6. Kirwins Rd. The full purple on the map is land outside the park, being an old town layout. It looks like blocks are gradually being purchased by the state. I think this means you can use this section of Kirwins Rd for an assembly. The hatched purple adjacent is zoned Fauna Refuge. This means that dogs are not allowed in this area. If you use this area advise orienteers that dogs are allowed at the assembly but should not be allowed out of the assembly area.
7. It has been some time since this area near the dam was used as an assembly area. No longer available.
8. Private land blocks used for the 1985 World Championships and the 2002 World Masters Games and other events. With the transfer of management between farming generations, these blocks are no longer available for orienteering use.
9. The area along tracks outside the private land has been used for a local event. No longer available.
Safety Issues:
In wet conditions steep rock slopes can become treacherous.
Map status:
The map is 15 years old. The rock accuracy remains unchanged. Opinion is that the vegetation is thickening, particularly in the east of the map. Any significant route choices would require checking of clear vegetation leads.
Map files:
Map is available on application to the committee. This is because of sensitivity over indigenous heritage sites marked in hidden layers on the map.
