Course Overview
This is an introductory level course that will introduce you to spreadsheets and teach you how to use them to manipulate information, perform calculations, and create graphs to present your information. You will discover how to establish proper routines and practices that promote safety and security, and you will practice basic competencies or employability skills as you work through the course. You will also examine your personal inventory (or interests and values) and make connections to possible career pathways.
You can use electronic spreadsheets to organize, manipulate, and analyze several types of data. Spreadsheets work best with numerical data—numbers, dates, and times—because they can perform most kinds of calculations very quickly. With a spreadsheet, you can create tables of numbers and continually change data to perform "what if" analyses. No matter how you decide to use spreadsheets, you can present the information in visually attractive chart formats to support your conclusions. The nice part of using a spreadsheet is that if you change or update your data, your results as determined by formulas will also update.
CTS Progression
INF1060: Spreadsheet 1 begins to build your skills towards obtaining Google or Microsoft Office Certification. Students continuing on the path towards Microsoft Office Certification should also complete INF2080: Spreadsheet 2.
Real-World Connections
To be successful in the work world, you need to have hard and soft skills. Hard skills are technical skills related to your job, such as knowing how to create proper spreadsheets that use formulas and that make you productive and efficient. Soft skills are the basic competencies you will practice throughout this course. Soft skills are what make you a good employee: having a positive attitude and being a creative problem solver, good team member, and skilled communicator. Whether you are interested in a career in business, technology, health sciences, or trades, increasingly all industries are in need of employees with strong computer skills.
A professional portfolio of your work is a valuable tool that can be used for job interviews to demonstrate your spreadsheet skills. Discuss creating a portfolio with your teacher. For now, save everything in your Drive.
