Explanation
Least Restrictive Environment: The IEP includes an explanation to the extent, if any, the student will not participate with non-disabled students in the general education class, in extracurricular and non-academic activities.Ā
ā Ā Ā The LRE statement must explain the extent of non-participation with non-disabled peers. If the student needs service out of the general education setting, why? āStudent requires specialized instruction in the special education setting due to:ā (clearly describe why the nature and severity of the studentās disability and needs is such that they must be removed from general education to receive services).
ā Ā For services provided by a licensed special educator in the general education setting, describe why, when and how it will look (ex: Student will receive social skills service in the gen ed classroom during the classroom time designated as āMorning MeetingāĀ in order to work on skill generalization with peers without disabilities; Student will receive specialized reading instruction in the co-taught general education classroom during independent work time in order to work on IEP goal for reading comprehension).
āĀ Ā List what the student is missing in general education when they are receiving special education services. āWhile receiving special education services, Student will not participate in the following general education classes/activities:ā
āĀ Ā Make sure the LRE accounts for all services in the service grid.
If the student needs a centerbased program, mention that need in the LRE. Remember: centerbased does not mean setting 3 and resource does not mean only setting 1 or 2.
ā Ā LRE must include information about asynchronous learning days that describe the special education and related services (including the anticipated needs, and frequency, location, and duration of services) to be provided to the child during planned asynchronous/e-learning days: guidance. It also must include how gen ed instruction/materials will be received if the student attends gen ed courses (this includes specialists and electives).
LRE must include information about any schedule changes that may impact the studentās day and service: guidance
