Spring Academic/Enrichment Highlights!
Virtual YES
In the coding enrichment, Ms. Boone is helping her students learn about the wonderful world of computer coding. Some of the activities they are working on are:
Animate a Name
Dance Party Unplugged
Minecraft Voyage Aquatic
Code your Hero
Imagine a World
Make a Flappy Game
The two most common programs used for our coding class are Scratch and CS First.
Ms. English works with our 4th grade students on Academics and a STEAM enrichment!
In 4th grade academic hour, we have worked on our vocabulary words using activities like virtual Bingo and having our classmates guess the word we act out or draw. We have used Google Jamboard to collaborate on math skills like fractions and solving math equations. Jamboard works just like a whiteboard in the classroom! We also work on our day school assignments if any help is needed. Fourth graders in YES really work hard!
We’ve had so much fun with our STEAM enrichment (science, technology, engineering, art, math) activities. We’ve learned about Google Apps and learned how to create stop motion animation using Google slides. The children learned some origami folds like sunglasses and conversation hearts. We built geometrical structures with Gummy Trollis and toothpicks. We learned that structures like our straws and tape creations need a wide base so they don’t topple over! We also observed the water cycle by placing ziploc bags of water taped to windows in our houses. We saw that condensation formed on the sides of our bags after the sun’s energy evaporated a small amount of the water. We have lots of STEAM activities left to do in the weeks ahead.
Highlights from Ms. English
“One of my 4th graders made this stop motion movie after just one hour of instruction. She made it last night and showed it to me today. She is now hooked! Making more tonight she said. She could be our next digital game designer!”

“STEAM--One of my STEAM students loved the animated movie using Google Slides. She has made even more now. She presented one of her movies to our class. The children were amazed!” -2/10/21
“In STEAM we made structures with toothpicks and gummi hearts. The kids made such interesting things!” 2/11/21
Ms. Speights works with our 5th grade Academics and keeps our students fit and active with Dancercise!
The YES program offers tutoring and one-on-one sessions with students Monday through Thursday. In our 5th Grade Academic class, we cover ELA, Science, and Math daily. Most days the students have completed their day school assignments and we will use Flocabulary, Reflex Math, or Kahoots to stay fluent in our lessons. Students present their screens when they need clarification on their work as well as guidance. We offer and provide encouragement, guidance, and participation weekly for our students.
The DancerCise enrichment was created to provide a healthy, fun, and energetic atmosphere for the YES students virtually. We learn about the importance of water. What is needed to replenish the body. How much water we should drink daily. As well as what may happen if we don’t receive the amount of water that is needed. In DancerCise, we also learn about how to check our heart rates, how to increase them, and the importance of regulating it. Lastly, we introduce different cultural styles of dance and performance. The students will view videos daily based on the culture selected while exercising and using their FitBit devices to track movements. Our FitBits are also used for personal goals and daily gains!

Gardening
The purpose of gardening is to train those students who might want to be future farmers. We help students start from scratch by finding the perfect location to plant. With the proper soil, location, and green thumbs, students will be able to plant a garden. Students are taught how to tend to their plants on a daily basis. We watch videos on planting and harvesting. Before harvest, students are taught how to prepare invoices and how to make a profit on their sale of produce. They are taught how to make ads for the community in order to sell their products. On the day of harvesting, students are ready to make money.

Me 101
In the ME 101 Enrichment, we are trying to discover who we are and how we can be the best that we can be Socially, Emotionally, Physically and Mentally!
Me 101 Students have been talking about Self Awareness and how at a young age they can start thinking about who they are and about their futures. We came up with a way to display some things that we discovered about ourselves and wanted to share. Here are some of the students' creations. Digital Vision Boards via Google Slides. Check them out .
Cooking
Teachers Townsend and Jackson incorporate hands on learning while incorporating technology in their lessons. The students are totally engaged and their tummies are happy:)
Uncrustable Foldable Fruit Taco
Students enjoy shooting hoops in a friendly slight competitive game of basketball. They learned proper stretching before exercise can decrease chances of injury and increase blood circulation.
Extended Academic Support
Mrs. Winkfield’s Class is hard at work brushing up on academic skills. The students are increasing their vocabulary with word work activities, building reading fluency and comprehension, as well as increasing math computational skills. We are using manipulatives and various strategies to increase speed and accuracy in addition and subtraction with regrouping, multiplication and division.
Student use manipulatives to grasp the mathematical concepts of 3rd grade
Coordinator Veal assists students with adjectives and verbs.
Students working independently on vocabulary, fluency and spelling.
