Fall 2020

August 2020-December 2020

What's happening in Gardening

Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Morgan met with parents in September to give students their collards and cabbages  to plant at home. They also provided students with herbs to use for seasoning once they have been grown.

Ms. Hill's Three Favorite  Gardening Activities

First: The students planting their cabbage and collards plants.

Second: Students researching their herbs and giving a presentation to the class.

Third: Students using the skills taught by  their teachers and planting their herbs.

STEAM

Elijah Sanford built the tallest, free-standing structure in our STEAM class.  Students could only use masking tape and drinking straws (he used the scissors to cut strips of tape).  Structures had to stand with no help, and students measured the height using tape measures.

We are learning about the water cycle in our STEAM class.  In an effort to see the water cycle in action, we are conducting an experiment using colored water inside plastic bags which we taped to windows in our homes.  We will observe and write in our journals what we observe each day for one week.  Brayden Hall poses with  one of his bags on Day 4 of our experiment.

Ms. English's Three Favorite  STEAM Activities

Water Cycle Experiment/Water Virtual Bingo

Stepping Through a Hole in a Sheet of Paper--yes I really fit through the hole in a sheet of paper!

Carving a Virtual Pumpkin--awesome site; lots of fun. After carving the pumpkin, we copy/pasted it into a google doc and wrote a story about it.

Cooking

Cooking is magical!!!

We have learned the importance of safety while cooking, how to create new recipes, explained the food pyramid, and getting ready to publish our cookbook.

Ms. Cooper's Three Favorite Cooking Activities

Students created hats that could be worn on Halloween out of Oreo Cookies.

One student developed  ice cream that was out of this world.

Brooms were made out of cheese and pretzels .

Coding

In case you haven't heard it today... Ms. Winkeld and Ms. Boone, you are doing an awesome job with coding. The way you make something so intimidating to most come alive and be so fun is pure genius. My hat goes off to both of you. And to my lovely students, YOU ROCK. I can't wait to see the many programs you'll design going forward. -- Dimitra Veal
"You can dance and it takes a lot of time to work"-- Anonymous
"I learned that you can move your character in and make it where you can let other people play your games"-- Jesse
"I learned how to code and also make a game"-- Cadin

In coding, some students are working on the Megaman Phantom Challenger, some are working on the make a chase game and the dance party coding

Dancercise

There's nothing like a jumping jacks competition to get you going... followed by a pulse check.

Let's get fit. Students are exercising virtually.

Who's up for a hula hoop challenge?

Ms. Speights is ready to facilitate exercise infused with dancing from diverse cultures.

Ms. Rucker's Three Favorite Me 101 Activities

My first top favorite is just having conversations with my students. In the hustle and bustle of school and school work conversations with our students are hard.

My second top favorite thing is teaching my students essentials for life. Etiquette, how to deal with their emotions, knowing how to deal with difficult situations etc.

My third favorite thing is being able to make items such as lip scrub and lip gloss because let's face it why not make the items to enhance our lips bc we know it it a very important part of our face that could help brighten someone's day. Our SMILE!!!
