The cross country program competed at Regionals this weekend, and two runners gave a stellar performance.
Freshman Abby Mathews and senior Dom Seigel ran breakthrough races, landing them each a spot at the State meet in Fortress Obetz this coming weekend.
In an interview with Journal News, Coach Steve Deitzer shared how extremely proud he was of Seigel over these last 4 years.
“This year he's a man on a mission. He just ran with incredible heart and passion right from the start to the finish,” Deitzer said.
Seigel is an ambitious runner and had a plan to secure his place at State in this race.
“I decided to run really smart,” Seigel said. “Last week I didn’t run the smartest. I went out too hard at the beginning and lost pace with the front of the pack. But today I stayed in touch with the front of the pack and that really helped out.”
Mathews made her mark and placed 6th this weekend at Regionals after being the individual GCL and District Champion.
Deitzer was very proud of Mathews and knew the entire time she had it in her to qualify.
“Abby ran just her normal brilliant race,” Deitzer said. “She started under control and just worked her way up through the pack. She is a very smart racer, runs really great tactics and just is relentless.”
Mathews could not have done it without her family, friends, and teammates pushing her along the way.
“It’s exciting and I’m thankful for all my teammates who have helped get here and pushed me and my coaches,” Mathews said.
