Fifth round draft pick and unexpected superstar kicker Evan McPherson has helped lead the Bengals to the promised land for the first time in 33 years with 5 game winners including 2 in playoffs.
In April many Bengals fans were very disappointed in the lack of linemen the Bengals took, especially diehard Bengals fan and current Elon University freshman Jack Sheppard.
“I wasn’t a big fan of the pick, I'm not gonna lie,” Sheppard said. “I knew that the Bengals needed a kicker but in the 5th round. I thought it was a reach at the time. I thought we could get him in the 6th or 7th round and draft another OL in the 5th. Our OL for me was a more important need than a kicker.”
Sheppard and many other fans' minds were changed at some point throughout the year when McPherson hit one of his 5 game winners.
“My mind was changed in the divisional round against the Titans,” Sheppard said.
“Theng only reason we won that game was because of him in my opinion. When he made the game winning 52 yard field goal as time expired to send us to the AFC championship game. That’s when I knew he was worth that pick.”
The run has been very memorable for all Bengals fans and a Super Bowl victory would be the icing on the cake.
“The comeback against the Chiefs has to be the most memorable moment for me,” Sheppard said. “I was watching it with my friends and I thought we were dead once we went down 21-3 because we looked awful on both sides of the ball. So I couldn’t believe we came back and won it in overtime. I thought we were screwed when we lost once we lost the coin toss because they had all the momentum. So that game messed with my emotions in the best possible way. I think this is every Bengals fan favorite moment from the Super Bowl.”
