Hawkeye has been in 7 MCU productions, and is one of the least liked original Avengers.
Despite being in most of the major MCU movies, Hawkeye has not had many chances to grow as a character. He has the least amount of screen time out of the six original Avengers.
The first appearance of Hawkeye is a brief cameo of “Thor.” This scene does not display much about his character as it is barely one minute.
In “The Avengers,” the audience finally sees Hawkeye as a trained spy who’s an expert with the bow and arrow. He gets mind-controlled by Loki Laufeyson, and is only saved by his ex-partner, Black Widow. He partners back up with her and the rest of the new Avengers to save the city of New York from the Chitauri. Hawkeye’s screen time for this movie is 12 minutes and 44 seconds.
The next time Hawkeye is seen is four years after “The Avengers” release, in “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” After Tony Stark and Bruce Banner created Ultron, Hawkeye takes the Avengers to his safe house. This is where we figure out Hawkeye has been keeping his secret family from the rest of the world. For the rest of the movie, this fact is almost entirely ignored as the Avengers go to fight Ultron.
Hawkeye does his best, but Pietro, his new teammate, had to sacrifice himself to save Hawkeye in the end. This trauma of his friend sacrificing his life in front of Hawkeye is never really mentioned again. Hawkeye’s screen time for this movie is 19 minutes and 56 seconds.
In “Captain America: Civil War,” Hawkeye talks to Wanda, Pietro’s sister, and gets her to join Captain America’s side against the Accords. He is then seen for a few minutes fighting in the airport battle, but nothing more. Hawkeye’s screen time for this movie is four minutes and 45 seconds.
We next see him in “Avengers: Endgame” where we learn his entire family got blipped by Thanos. He turns to a vigilante life where he takes on criminals under the alias Ronin. Black Widow collects him as the remaining Avengers try to figure out how to get back those who got blipped. Black Widow and Hawkeye head to Vormir to collect the soul stone. This is where Black Widow sacrifices herself to get the stone. Hawkeye is traumatized by this, and mourns her and then has to go fight against Thanos. Hawkeye’s screen time for this movie is 18 minutes.
In “Black Widow,” Yelena is given a picture of Hawkeye and told that he was Black Widow's killer. Hawkeye’s screen time for this movie is less than 10 seconds.
He has not had much screen time as the other Avengers, before his show, and that’s a big reason why he had very little character development and was the least liked out of the original six Avengers. His show is likely to change this and develop him more as a character.
The new “Hawkeye” show came out on Nov. 24. It is displaying Hawkeye’s life after all of these previous events. This series has shown Hawkeye’s character more in depth than ever before. It is exploring the aspect of him being deaf like in the comics. His character is more personable and relatable. It shows the trauma that he has endured. It’s also tying up some plot holes about his character from the previous movies.
