A portion of faculty members here at Badin are also parents of attending students. Many family names are common throughout the Ramily, Patrick Ray gives an insight on what it’s like to be a high school student with a parent that is a faculty member.
Many people at Badin know Mrs. Ray by her shining smile and great attitude. Patrick explains how he felt when Mrs. Ray was a substitute in his class for the first time.
“Awkward, it was pretty weird but I was kind of used to it because she subbed at Sacred Heart when I was there,” said Patrick.
As Mrs. Ray has been a substitute for the past three years, her face has become familiar to the student body. As Patrick has seen his mom more frequently throughout the school day, he gives insight on how his experience has changed due to high school.
“It’s a little different now, my relationships with my friends especially. They always ask if my mom is subbing in certain classes, but generally my friends like her as a sub,” said Patrick.
Most students look forward to seeing Mrs. Ray in their classes or throughout the school. Other parent teachers are also close with other staff and administration which could give challenges to the children of Badin staff.
“It’s not really that weird, most of the time I’m not really a bad student so it’s not a big issue,” said Patrick.
Having students in class presents many opportunities for the faculty to talk to the parent staff members about their children, even if it might not be in a positive way. Many would think that having a parent as a substitute, teacher or in administration may cause tension but Patrick believes the opposite.
“I get to see her more and if I forget to get something signed, I can always just go to her room so it definitely improves efficiency,” said Patrick.
What many people may not know is how it feels to see their parent(s) in and out of the family aspect. To say the least, Patrick and his fellow peers enjoy Mrs. Ray’s presence everyday.
