This weekend was DC’s Fandome event. This event was created last year to share any news revolving around DC’s upcoming events.
The Fandome talks about more than just the DC movies, but their shows and video games as well. The focus for this article however is just on the upcoming movies DC has in store.
Movie wise, DC gave the fans their first teaser trailer for Black Adam, an invincible enemy of Shazam. This movie has been in the works for a long time, Dwayne Johnson had been casted to be Black Adam since 2014.
The teaser trailer didn’t show The Rock’s face, but it did show the fans and casual viewers what Black Adam can do. At the end of the trailer, the release date for the film appeared, July 29th, 2022.
Though many fans have been looking forward to seeing Black Adam on the big screen since news of the first Shazam movie came out. The sequel to the comedic, family-oriented superhero film was shown to be in the works at Fandome.
At Fandome we got to see and learn more about the super powered family in this behind the scenes footage. The footage even showed two of the bad guys, or bad women, that Shazam and his family would be facing in this film.
The behind the scenes footage also showed the many different locations the film would take place in and described how this film would lean more into the mythology part of the DCU. Though unfortunately it won’t be out until 2023.
But not only is DC leaning into mythos for inspiration, they are also leaning towards the multiverse and the scientific side of their universe.
The new Flash movie will revolve around the well known story of Flashpoint, or when Barry Allen goes back in time to save his mother from being murdered by the Reverse Flash. Allen saves his mom but also creates chaos within the multiverse. Seemingly colliding multiple versions of him into one universe.
While the story is well known, this take on it is one that hasn’t been seen in a while. The CW show version of The Flash had a Flashpoint storyline, they didn’t have one very influential character in the show. Thomas Wanye, Bruce Wanye’s father, as Batman.
One of the exciting parts of this trailer was the narration of Micheal Keaton. The actor was confirmed to be reprising his role as The Batman at last year's Fandome through the storyboards shown.
Though his introduction in this film is one that everyone won’t forget. Keaton not only narrates the trailer, but he also appears just briefly in the trailer from within the shadows. A fitting entrance for the character many fans have wanted to see come back again.
It is unknown as of now if he will be playing the same Batman character from Tim Burton’s film, there is some speculation that he’ll be Thomas Wanye as the caped vigilante. But as the storyboards from last year's fandom showed, he was wearing the same suit as he did in Burton’s film which does confirm he’ll be playing his version of Bruce Wanye most likely.
The film however is currently in production so there’s no release date as of now for when it should come out. But it certainly brings hype from last year's Fandome event back once more for the film.
Though Keaton’s Batman isn’t the only version of the character fans have been looking forward to seeing. At last year’s event, the first look at Robert Pattinson and Matt Reeves’ Batman was released to the world.
This iteration of the character isn’t one that’s been shown before on screen. This is Bruce Wanye during his early years as Batman. No code, no remorse, nothing but a desire to stop the crime within Gotham City in whatever way he can.
The new trailer for the film started off by showing this film’s bad guy, The Riddler portrayed by Paul Dano, getting put into custody. Though for a murderer, he seems much too calm to be arrested, which many suspect is part of his evil plan.
The Riddler isn’t the only bad guy in this film, The Penguin played by Colin Farell will appear in the movie as well. The trailer showed him telling Pattinson to “Take it easy sweetheart” while Batman was fighting his goons.
His character is still a bit unknown when it comes to his role in the film though there is a Penguin series in development for HBO Max using his portrayal of the character.
Though we do have another villain, an anti-hero of sorts. Catwoman is in the film as well, played by Zoe Kravatiz. Her character is a thief who does have a romance with Batman in the comics. We do get to see her in action in the trailer and she looks absolutely stunning.
Her character is speculated to have a connection with another character, known crime boss Carmine Falcone in Gotham played by John Turturro. Though his role is still unknown but the speculation between his character and Catwoman has every fan’s gears turning.
Outside of the costumed characters in the film, Andy Serkis was shown as the new iteration of Alfred in a short clip in the trailer along with some voice over bits. Jeffery Wright is playing the famous Commissioner Gordon or Detective Gordon in this film working with Batman to solve the mystery The Riddler created.
The upcoming film will be in theaters March 4th and is definitely a fan favorite from the event. Though there’s even more superhero movies soon to come out.
Aquaman’s sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, is set to come to theaters December 16th, 2022. Though there wasn’t much shown in this trailer teaser besides some concept art for the film and how it “isn’t afraid to embrace its fantasy” according to Director James Wan.
And that concludes all of the upcoming films from the DCU! Many fans are excited to see their favorite superheroes on the big screen once again. With the amount of movies coming out as the world begins to open up again, it’s safe to say there will be no stopping the love fans have to see these comic book characters come to life.
