The Badin Banner

Senior promotes suicide prevention

The yellow ribbon project was a trend that caught on quick at Badin. $1 bought an out of uniform day, and a ribbon to put on your lanyard. Over 280 ribbons were sold, and all of the proceeds went to The American Foundation For Suicide Prevention.

Caitlyn Conrad, a Senior, is a serious activist for suicide prevention.

“My neighbor committed suicide, a few year ago. I want to turn a negative into a positive and help others through these things. There’s a stigmatism on suicide and it makes people uncomfortable to talk about it, I want to show light to this serious topic,” Conrad said.

In the 7th grade, her neighbor committed suicide. During his funeral, a lady handed yellow ribbons out at end. A ribbon in the color yellow represents suicide awareness in the month of September.

“My favorite thing about this project was seeing everyone who bought a ribbon wearing yellow shirts on the out of uniform day and on their lanyards. It was really bittersweet for me.”

Thought Caitlyn came up with the Yellow Ribbon Project, she couldn’t do it all on her own.

“My biggest supporters through all of this were Mr. Keating, Mrs. Enderle, my grandma, and a few friends from my senior class,” Conrad said.

Caitlyn’s biggest goal for this project is to start a conversation that can be continued.

“I hope this is something that’s continued, and that someone can be equally as passionate about this as I am. By doing this, there is nothing that I didn’t already know, but it reaffirmed the doubt I had and shows that people do actually care about this.”
