September through October is celebrated as Blood Cancer and Breast Cancer Awareness Months throughout the United States.
Two cancer organizations hold memorial walks to remember those who lost their battles and those who are still fighting: Light the Night and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
Light the Night is a lantern-lit walk through the streets of Cincinnati to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society research.
“Each colored lantern represents a person, gold for those who have passed, red for those who support an end to cancer and white for survivors. We fight for white [survivors], and work for no more gold [passed],” Dr. James Essell, blood cancer specialist, explained.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk also raises money for the research and development of specific chemotherapy types and to help with financial aid.
“This fight is everyone's fight,” an Avon volunteer said. “Every dollar we raise helps the American Cancer Society fund breast cancer research, free rides to chemo, free places to stay near treatment and a live 24/7 cancer helpline.”
With one walk at a time, we are all aiming for one goal: to kill cancer.
