The Badin Banner

The 25th Putnam County Spelling Bee Musical

Students spelled their way through songs and dances as they performed on stage this past Thursday through Sunday. Many of the actors and actresses were stressed as opening night came upon them.

“We were having trouble with the orchestra and getting the songs of what we wanted them to be,” revealed junior Hannah Rieke who played Olive Ostrovsky.

Badin students had to learn dances to songs such as “Magic Foot” and “My Favorite Moment of the Bee.” While the actors and actresses at Badin enjoy being up on stage, a lot of them have insecurities about being in the spotlight.

Hannah Rieke admitted, “Living up to expectations is hard because some people have lower expectations and you want to prove them wrong. While others have high expectations, you want to meet them as much as possible.”

The musical offered an element of surprise by offering the crowd to participate in the spelling bee. Many people signed up when they bought their tickets for the chance to participate. Junior Connor Kurtz was picked for this special occasion on Friday night.

Connor Kurtz expressed, “I was very nervous, and I didn’t want to mess up the show.”

The students feel more prepared as the performances go on. They get better remembering their dances and songs. A lot of actors and actresses have a favorite performance they excelled at.

“Honestly probably Sunday because everyone has their lines together and we knew when our cues were,” recounted Katie Hopewell.

Badin student performers enjoyed a late night snacks after the show and went to various restaurants throughout the performance nights.

Senior Katie Hopewell mentioned, “I definitely liked AppleBees because everyone was jokingly making fun of each other and laughing and talking.”

The Badin community is grateful to Mrs. Cline, the orchestra, the cast and crew who put in time and effort to the musical, and the audience who attended. The theater community at Badin is far from over and will be performing The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 in March 2020.
