Mr. Dresdow: Substitute for Suedkamp

After Mrs. Suedkamp announced she was taking a personal leave, a feeling of uncertainty surrounded her students.

Many familiar names were passed around regarding who would cover for a fantastic teacher like Suedkamp. These names included Coach Cheek, Mr. Slovisky, Mr. Hacker and Mrs. Vieira. However, the long-time substitute teacher position was given to a Badin newcomer: Mr. David Dresdow.

The recently retired teacher was eager to bring out the best in his students during his short time teaching math classes at Badin. However, being unfamiliar with Mrs. Suedkamp’s teaching style and the progress of the students, the substitute teacher was faced with several obstacles.

“It was a lot of work coming in for four weeks and not knowing where students were at. I tried to help them the best I could,” Dresdow said.

During his first few days teaching, the students and teachers tried to make Dresdow feel very welcome and comfortable in the Badin community.

“Your staff here, your teachers here and your administration are some of the most friendly people I’ve ever met,” Dresdow said, “I also think that the students, for the most part, are very well-behaved. They’re very kind, loving, and I appreciated them.”

Dresdow may be retired, but still keeps himself busy with a variety of hobbies. The substitute teacher never lets his old age affect his active personality.

“In my spare time, I like to play tennis and ride bikes. Last summer, a group of us rode our bikes on the bike trail from downtown Cincinnati all the way to downtown Cleveland,” Dresdow said.

One of Dresdow’s many positive traits is his connection to God. Dresdow embraces his religious beliefs and attempts to make the Lord known to his classes.

“I actually prayed to God after I retired and asked Him what he wanted me to do,” Dresdow said, “The next day, I was reading through the Bible and in Psalm 71, it said, ‘God do not forsake me in my old age until I tell the next generation your truth.’”

Mrs. Suedkamp returned to teach classes at Badin this past Friday and everyone seems happy to have her back. During his last day as substitute teacher, Dresdow was asked if he had any advice for the students before he left.

“The most important thing in life is knowing God, knowing Christ as your savior. Follow Him all your life and obey Him. That’s what we were made for, we were made to live with God and to follow Him. Every student should find out what God’s will is for them individually and do it,” Dresdow said.
