Valentine’s Day: Day of Love

Valentine’s Day is filled with love and candy. High expectations are presented each year with many couples stressed out.

Couples are relieved that Valentine’s Day is on a Friday this year, but it also means that restaurants will be more crowded than they would be if Valentine’s Day was in the middle of the week.

“I am going out to eat with my girlfriend, and we are eating at a later time to avoid the crowd,” junior Jacob Collins commented.

Many students have fond memories of Valentine’s Day as kids from elementary school parties and handing out valentines.

“I handed out Star Wars and dog Valentine’s Day cards. I have also printed out my own. Usually, I got them from Target with my mom,” sophomore Ashleigh Green said.

Valentine’s Day candy is popular among many students. Various heart shaped chocolates and sugary delights fill the grocery stores right after Christmas.

“I’m always a fan of chocolate, but one time I got Starbursts and that was good,” Green responded.

About 6 million people propose to their partners during Valentine’s Day in the U.S every year. Nearly $2.5 billion dollars was spent on jewelry for the significant other in 2013. While some may find this a romantic gesture, others find it cliche and a waste of money.

“It’s more on the opinion of each person, but I wouldn’t like it if someone proposed to me on Valentine’s Day because I would not be surprised. I just think money could be spent on something more sentimental rather than on jewelry,” senior Kaitlyn Wilms viewed.
