Substitute teacher: Mr. Slovisky

By: Mikey Madden

With several teachers becoming ill and taking personal leaves over the course of the school year, substitute teachers become crucial to keeping a controlled and productive classroom. Mr. Slovisky has been a frequent substitute teacher at Badin for several years and has a variety of reasons to return.

“I like getting out of the house,” Slovisky said, “Most of the students are very nice and polite.”

The substitute teacher clarified that he only teaches at Badin due to complications with other schools. He enjoys the presence of the staff and the community, despite going to a different high school.

“When I was in high school, Badin was not a thing,” Slovisky said, “There was Hamilton Catholic and Notre Dame.”

Slovisky’s most notable trait is correcting a student’s grammar when asking to be excused from the class. The substitute teacher always clarifies that the student should use the word “may” rather than “can.”

“It bothers me because I have been next to English teachers who let them get away with it,” Slovisky said, “I’ve always thought that people who can use correct English get better jobs in the future.”

Many students enjoy having Mr. Slovisky as a substitute teacher, and he doesn’t seem to be stepping down anytime soon.
