This means what is the ground like that some where is built on. Is it:
What is the climate like - warm or cold?
Land locked or does it have a sea port this would allow trade access
Next to other countries or separate. What are those countries like?
To be able to fully study and understand the issues in Rio de Janeiros favelas, you first need to understand the wider concept of where in the world Rio de Janeiro is. As well as having a good idea of the factors which affect Rio de Janeiros development and growth on a daily basis.

Rio de Janeiro is located in the Southern hemisphere but is quite near the equator. This means it has a very warm climate all year round.
Rio de Janeiro is located on the coast at the South East Coast of Brazil. It has a large natural harbour Guanabara Bay which provides really good access to international trade and historically an excellent stopping point for ships sailing past.
Rio de Janeiro is world famous for its beaches, especially Copacabana beach. It also has several other beaches around the city, as the city hugs the coast line north and south.
Christ the Redeemer is one of the most recognisable aspects of Rio de Janerio. It sits on top of Corcovado mountain. Opposite is Sugar Loaf Mountain. This is a good example of the confined space Rio de Janeiro has developed in side.
The Tijuca National Park forms a large part of Rio de Janeiro and is mostly a Rainforest.
This helps us understand that the climate here is also very wet.

Has a current population of 6.7 million in the city
Population of around 12 million in the surrounding urban areas
51% of residents identify as being Catholic
An important centre of business and industry
A city of contrasts with old and new buildings, motorways and dirt tracks, and shacks and sky scrapers sitting side by side
