The largest Atlantic Storm system ever recorded. Winds spanning 1100 miles.
Effects or impacts of a tropical storm are normally very widespread due to the large size of the extreme weather event. Impacts are normally categories as Social (affecting people) or Environmental (affecting the landscape).
Some of the major effects on people were:
72 people died over the course of the storm
8 million homes without power for several days into weeks
80-100 homes caught fire and destroyed in New York state.
Large scale road and transport damage. This stranded people and isolated them from help.
Looting in Long Island, meant loss of property and money for shop owners.
Schools closed across several states, with thousands of pupils left without any access to education.
A lot of the damage done by Hurricane Sandy left millions of people in a precarious and dangerous situation. Support and recovery needed to be fast to make sure no one else was at risk of losing their life.
If people are left without food, water or shelter for too long disease and malnutrition sets in which can cause larger long scale impacts.
Fortunately, the U.S were able to supply a lot of funding for support, however, places like Haiti and Jamaica were hit as badly as the U.S but could not afford to recover so quickly.
Look at the images and information below for everything the Americans did to support a quick recovery for their citizens.
