What is a National Park?
National Parks are areas of protected predominantly natural land. They are protected
because of their beautiful countryside, varied wildlife and cultural heritage.
People live and work in the national parks and the farms, villages and towns are protected
along with the landscape and wildlife.
National parks welcome visitors and provide opportunities for everyone to experience,
enjoy and learn about their special qualities.
The Aims of a National Park
All fifteen national parks (diagram above) share two statutory purposes:
To conserve and enhance the natural and cultural heritage of the area, and
To promote understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of the national park by
the public.
The Scottish national parks have two further statutory purposes:
To promote sustainable use of the natural resources of the area, and
To promote sustainable economic and social development of the area’s communities
