Rio de Janeiro is located on the southeast corner of Brazil and is South Facing. It is in the tropics its below the equator, so has a large impact on the climate.

Naturally Fertile Land allowed for the growth of the sugar cane industry. The Natural harbour of Guanabara Bay meant that a seaport could be set up and trade routes established with Europe and the Americas. Allowing for the development of the city as a trading port.
Due to the climate of Rio de Janeiro, there are several rainforests found in and around the city, such as the Tijuca National park. The area around Rio is also very hilly, with large areas of mountains and hills.
The climate and sheltered bay also create long sandy beaches that attract lots of tourists as well as aiding in creating a relaxed party atmosphere in the city.
