Migration is the movement of people from one place to another, one area of a country to
another or can be international, from one country to another.
Voluntary migration - when people choose to move usually due to pull factors - some areas attract people and pull people towards them.
Important facts about Voluntary Migration:
The migrant makes the decision to move.
Most migration is voluntary.
Push and Pull Factors determine whom moves and where they move to.
Forced migration - when people (refugees) have no choice but to move to a better area. They are pushed out of an area due to political problems, conflict or natural disasters.
Important facts about Forced Migration:
Involuntary migration in which the mover has no role in the decision-making process
Slavery:
About 11 million African slaves were brought to the Americas between 1519 and 1867.
In 1860, there were close to 4 million slaves in the United States.
Refugees will fall under this banner
Military deployment also falls under this but is generally a small % of global figures
Children of all migrants technically fall under this banner but will not be discussed specifically
While the last few years have hugely affected levels of migration with both a Global Pandemic and Brexit we will be using case studies from 2019. While the specifics of these case studies may seem out of date or no longer relevant the underlying principles in terms of effects to donor countries and receiving countries remains relevant and applies to any new mass migration that may occur.
Push Factors (factors that cause people to leave an area or country).
Pull Factors (factors that attract people to a new area or country).
