Cooperating Teacher & Site Administrator Training Information

CTC Cooperating Teacher Requirements

California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) requires (beginning Fall 2018) that district-employed supervisors are provided a minimum of 10 hours of training. Please complete the Training Survey to document your training hours.

Initial orientation to the program curriculum is one portion of the 10-hour training requirement.  Please review the Clinical Practice Orientation Module on your home page, complete the assessment/survey to become familiar with APU's Clinical Practice program, and document two hours of training (Module/Assessment/University Coach orientation).

APU Wants to Work With You

The Office of Student Placements understands this is an immense undertaking for those already teaching and opening up their classrooms to a Teacher Candidate. Therefore, we have developed a way for potential and current Cooperating Teachers to utilize the Professional Development they have received or are receiving from their School District to meet this requirement.

In order to keep all Cooperating Teachers up to date, APU is asking that all current and future Cooperating Teachers watch Orientation Videos at the beginning of any given term. The Orientation Module provides a brief overview of our programs with a short survey at the end, allowing any Cooperating Teacher hosting a Teacher Candidate to be as up-to-date as possible with our programs as they seek to grow and change with the educational community.

After viewing the Orientation Module, the Cooperating Teacher will meet with the Teacher Candidate's University Coach to review any questions, comments, or concerns regarding the program and its requirements. The Orientation Module and University Coach Meeting will qualify for two hours of the CTC requirement.

Total: 2hrs.

Previous and Future District Provided Professional Development

The Office of Student Placements understands that our Cooperating Teachers are actively engaged with their School District in seeking to gain more knowledge and grow as educators. To support this continued growth, APU can allow educators desiring to be Cooperating Teachers to record their previous and/or future Professional Development hours as a substitute for the Intersegmental Modules provided by the CCTE.

Professional Development, such as AVID Training, BTSA Training, Educational Conferences, etc., can be logged with us via the PD Survey below. The hours logged here currently do not expire and will kept on record at APU for future use should a Cooperating Teacher be willing to take on future Teacher Candidates.

A complete log of individual training completions will be compiled via a survey sent to each Cooperating Teacher/Site Administrator/Site Mentor each semester.

Intersegmental Modules

These Modules are created by CCTE and provided by Course Networking. If a Cooperating Teacher finds that they do not have the Professional Development needed in order to meet the requirements of the state, they can submit their name and email address to us via the form below. At the end of each week we will be submitting any new names and email addresses to the CCTE who will then reach out directly to the Cooperating Teacher with access to the Intersegmental Modules.

Co-Teaching Information

Co-Teaching Model

Traditionally, TCs have slowly and deliberately worked with the CT to assume the primary role of instruction. During the complete takeover period, it is not uncommon for the CT to work on other tasks such as curriculum development, Tier Two instruction groups, or other related tasks while still in the room.

We encourage CTs and TCs, with support from the UC, to consider a team-teaching model. While team teaching or co-teaching is not a new model in schools, it is applicable to the CP experience. This approach allows two professionals to work together to support student learning. The co-teaching model of CP allows students increased opportunities to get help when and how they need it. It allows teachers to incorporate co-teaching strategies, grouping and educating students in ways that are not possible with just one teacher.

We genuinely believe that this structure will provide our TCs with a complete and rigorous CP experience and allow the CT to remain involved in the quality of learning experiences presented to students. The partnership allows the CT to provide consistent mentoring, providing the TC with the time and support necessary to gain the skills and confidence required to teach successfully.

Suggestions for implementing a co-teaching model.
