Clinical Practice Qualifications

Requirements and Prerequisites

All teacher candidates in the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the Department of Special Education, and the Early Chilhood Education program are required to successfully complete Clinical Practice prior to recommendation for a Credential.  In order to participate in Clinical Practice, teacher candidates must:

• Be an active student in the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the Department of Special Education, or the Early Childhood Education program prior to submitting a Clinical Practice Application.

• Complete all required coursework with a grade of B- or better.

  • If a course is not passed with a B- or higher in the term directly prior to Clinical Practice, placement and/or participation will be canceled until the coursework clearance requirement is met.

• Have no Dispositonal Concerns

  • Teacher Candidate dispositions are completed by faculty a minimum of twice during the program leading up to Clinical Practice, and one last time in Clinical Practice.  

  • Faculty and DTE Administrators will work with candidates that have had disposition concerns reported to discuss progress and next steps, as well as develop a plan for professional growth.

• The Clinical Practice Application must be received by the Office of Student Placements no later than April 1 to participate in Clinical Practice during fall semester or September 1 to participate in Clinical Practice during spring semester.

• Negative TB test dated no more than 2 years earlier than the last date of classes for the Clinical Practice semester must be received by the Office of Student Placements no later than April 15 to participate in Clinical Practice during fall semester or September 15 to participate in Clinical Practice during spring semester.

  • Can be completed by Chest Xray, Skin Test, or Blood Test.

  • For purpose of our programs, the TB test expires two years from the date the TB test was read

  • TB Risk Assessments do not satisfy this requirement. A full test is required for submission

• Valid Certificate of Clearance or other acceptable California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) document must be received by the Office of Student Placements no later than April 15 to participate in Clinical Practice during fall semester or September 15 to participate in Clinical Practice during spring semester.

• Documentation of U.S. Constitution coursework or exam must be received by the Office of Student Placements no later than April 15 to participate in Clinical Practice during fall semester or September 15 to participate in Clinical Practice during spring semester.

• Official passing score report of CSET exams or of subject matter waiver letter from a CTC approved subject matter preparation program must be received by the Office of Student Placements no later than April 15 to participate in Clinical Practice during fall semester or September 15 to participate in Clinical Practice during spring semester.  Please note: CSET subtest exams expire ten years from their administration date unless the score is used for recommendation of an Intern Credential or above.
