The Office of Student Placements is deeply indebted to the teachers in our partner K-12 school districts who agree to serve as Master Teachers to our Teacher Candidates. Our Master Teachers are among the most important resources in the teacher preparation process. You support, guide, and encourage Teacher Candidates as they develop and grow.
There are many updates and clarifications in this Spring 2019 orientation. Please review the video or read the PDF notes so you may provide the most up-to-date support.

Master Teachers will complete Mid-Point (Week 8 - middle of semester) and Final (Week 16 - end of semester) Evaluations via a Taskstream Survey. This survey will be sent by SOE Placements one to two weeks before the middle of the semester (Week 6 or 7 of Session 1) and one to two weeks before the end of the semester (Week 6/14 or 7/15 of Session 2). These assessments have the same content as the University Mentor Observation Reports and Mid-Point and Final Evaluations (just a different platform). Evaluations are based upon the CREATe* Rubrics below.
A complete log of individual training completions will be compiled via a survey sent to each Master Teacher each semester. Access to the survey is here.
California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) requires (beginning Fall 2018) that Master Teachers are provided a minimum of 10 hours training. Please complete the Master Teacher Training Survey to document your training hours.
Initial orientation to program curriculum is one portion of the 10-hour training requirement. Please review the 35-minute Clinical Practice Orientation Module and complete the assessment/survey to become familiar with APU's Clinical Practice program and document two hours of training (Module/Assessment/University Mentor face-to-face orientation).
Eight hours of training will be provided through Intersegmental Project: Professional Development Modules, prepared by California Council on Teacher Education (CCTE), and APU's Clinical Practice Training Series (see below for available modules). A link to the CCTE Modules is sent to APU Master Teachers (from CourseNetworking, on behalf of CCTE) beginning Fall 2018.
NOTE: Access must be granted through CCTE. APU provides MT contact information; CCTE manages the training.
Please review the module and complete the Exit Ticket to document your training (no other documentation required).

Co-Teaching Model
Traditionally, TCs have slowly and deliberately worked with the MT to assume the primary role of instruction. During the complete takeover period, it is not uncommon for the MT, while still in the room, to work on other tasks such as curriculum development, Tier Two instruction groups, or other related tasks.
We encourage MTs and TCs, with support from the UM, to consider a team-teaching model. While team teaching or co-teaching is not a new model in schools, it is applicable to the CP experience. This approach allows two professionals to work together to support student learning. The co-teaching model of CP allows students increased opportunities to get help when and how they need it. It affords teachers opportunities to incorporate co-teaching strategies, grouping and educating students in ways that are not possible with just one teacher.
We truly believe that this structure will provide our TCs with a full and rigorous CP experience and allow the MT to remain involved in the quality of learning experiences presented to students. The partnership allows the MT to provide consistent mentoring, providing the TC with the time and support necessary to gain skills and confidence required to teach successfully.
If you have questions or issues related to serving as a Master Teacher, the University Mentor is your first point of contact for assistance. However, please feel free to reach out to the Office of Student Placements if you have questions or concerns.
