Phonics at Caldicotes
The teaching of phonics at Caldicotes
In July 22 we became a Read Write Inc academy. All staff have been trained in the Read, Write Inc programme to help our children become remarkable readers.

Children will learn to read in a very simple but structured and systematic way.
Children will learn to:
1. Read letters by their ‘sounds’
2. Blend these sounds into words
3. Read the words in a story.
How Phonics is taught in Caldicotes Primary Academy
First, your child will learn to read:
Set 1 Speed Sounds: these are sounds written with one letter:
m a s d t i n p g o c k u b f e l h r j v y w z x
At the same time as learning these pure sounds, children will also learn how to form the letters correctly using Read, Write Inc letter mantras to support correct formation

Once your child has learnt the Set 1 sounds they then need to learn how to sound out the letters in a word and how to blend them together to read them. This will be achieved through ‘Fred Talk.’
Children will use their ‘Fred fingers’ to segment words into sounds and blend them back together to read words.
Children will then be introduced to sounds written with two letters
(your child will call these ‘special friends’): sh th ch
qu ng nk ck
Here are some examples of words containing these sounds, by sound-blending,
m–a–t mat, c–a–t cat, g–o–t got, f–i–sh fish,
s–p–o–t spot, b–e–s–t best, s–p–l–a–sh splash
If your child is working at this level, they will bring home; Blending Books and Red, Green or Purple Storybooks.
If your child is in this phonics group, your child’s reading book will be changed every 3 days.
Once your child is confident with Set 1 letters and ‘special friends’ your child will learn to read:
Set 2 Speed Sounds: ay ee igh ow oo oo ar or
air ir ou oy
Here are some examples of words containing these sounds; p-l-ay, f-ee-t, r-ight-t, c-l-ow-n, b-oo-k, l-oo-k, c-ar, f-or-k, h-air, f-ir-s-t, p-r-ou-d, b-oy
If your child is working at this level they will bring home a ; Pink, Orange or Yellow Storybook.
If your child is in this phonics group their reading book will be changed every 3 days.
Finally, your child will learn to read:
Set 3 Speed Sounds: ea oi a-e i-e o-e u-e aw
are ur er ow ai oa ew ire ear ure
Here are some examples of words containing these sounds; l-ea-f, f-oi-l, c-a-k-e, t-i-m-e, r-o-p-e, c-u-b-e, c-l-aw, b-are, t-ur-n-i-p, l-a-dd-er, c-l-ow-n, r-ai-n, g-r-ew, f-ire, f-ear, p-ure

Ongoing assessment
Your child will be assessed every 6 weeks to monitor their progress and ensure that they are accessing phonics teaching tailored to their own phonic knowledge.
If your child is in Year 1, they will complete the 'Phonics screening check' at the beginning of summer 2. Click to find out more about the assessment and look out for the meeting closer to the time.
Book bags
In your child’s book bag, they will bring home; a phonics book (a book that they have read in their phonics group) and a phonics book bag book.
If your child is learning set 1 sounds, they will bring home; the letters that they have learnt throughout the week and a reading for pleasure book (a book for you to read with your child.)
It is essential that your child brings their book bag to school each day!
