Maths Mastery at Caldicotes
Below is our Maths at Caldi handbook. It outlines how we have adopted the 'My Mastery' approach to Maths by ARK along with our Caldi Teaching Approach linked to Rosenshine's Principles.
Mastering maths means: children acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. The phrase ‘Teaching for Mastery’ describes the elements of classroom practice and school organisation that combine to give children the best chances of mastering maths.
At each stage of learning, children should be able to demonstrate a deep, conceptual understanding of the topic and be able to build on this over time. Building a secure foundation will result in greater mathematical development of thinking skills and application.
Key Aims:
to promote enjoyment and enthusiasm for learning through practical activity, exploration and discussion;
to promote confidence and competence with numbers and the number system;
to develop the ability to solve problems through decision-making and reasoning in a range of contexts;
to develop a practical understanding of the ways in which information is gathered and presented;
to explore features of shape and space, and develop measuring skills in a range of contexts;
to understand the importance of mathematics in everyday life.
We enhance our 'Mastery' provision for children across the school through:
‘Mastering Number’
This project aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and confidence and flexibility with numbers. Our Reception, Y1 and Y2 all engage in this project during their half an hour additional maths session each day. In Y1 and 2 other tasks are added to this time throughout the year such as ‘Tough Ten’ learning reviews and arithmetic practice for SATs.
‘Nailing Number’
This additional 20 minutes of maths each day which incorporates arithmetic practise, timetables and vocabulary. The content covered in these sessions daily is not always related to the main maths session but it is to ensure basic skills are covered and reviewed regularly. Nailing Number sessions vary throughout the academy to ensure number fluency and arithmetic skills are built upon. Nailing Number sessions are as follows:
EYs and KS1
Mastering Number sessions (all 10 weeks)
Tough Ten (remaining weeks of the term)
Y3/4
Timestables practice through chanting, 5 step plan and TTRs
Tough Ten
At the beginning of Spring term, Y3 will begin using TTRs 3x weekly and Y4 will complete daily soundchecks in preparation for MTC.
Y5/6
Daily multiplication chant and 1 minute timestables test
Tough Ten
9 Key Topics
Y5 to begin working through 9 Key Topics from Spring term.
Arithmetic Proficiency
Arithmetic tests are completed at least once per week from Spring term in Y2 to Y6 to provide children with the opportunity to develop their fluency. The test aims to develop their recall of important facts and concepts and practise their application of efficient strategies and methods.
