Grade of C or above in 10th or 11th grade English
This course prepares students for the AP Literature and Composition exam by equipping them with the analytical and writing skills necessary for success. A rigorous syllabus immerses students in the careful reading and critical analysis of literary works written in—or translated into—English. Through a diverse selection of fiction, drama, and poetry, students explore how literature reflects and critiques human experiences, institutions, and social structures. The course emphasizes the development of skills in literary analysis, critical thinking, and composition as students examine the choices writers make to achieve thematic and stylistic effects.
Students will engage with challenging texts, compose analytical essays, and craft arguments about the interpretations of literature. The syllabus provides a framework of "big ideas" and enduring understandings that spiral throughout the course, promoting deep conceptual learning. As they progress, students will develop advanced skills in interpreting, discussing, and writing about texts across genres.
Formative and summative assessments aligned with the AP Exam are integral to the course, supporting students’ readiness for success on the exam and for future collegiate studies.
