comment on what they're doing or looking at. Tie a balloon above your baby when they are on their back and turn on the fan! When your baby notices it, talk about how the balloon is moving (up, down, bouncing, dancing). This can be great conversation during clothing changes.
With toddlers,

imitate them, and add words: Toddlers love to ask adults "What's that?" and "Why?" When you respond, be sure to ask the toddler back, "What do you think that is?" and "Why do you think that?" Listen to their response and continue the conversation by asking them more questions.
