In The Burrow, children attend for Additional Learning Support and also as an alternative learning space in addition to their classroom. We will provide updates on how the classroom environment is progressing, the learning and fun happening here each week and the achievements we have made too!
The Burrow is supported by our Additional Support teachers, Mr McCallum and Miss Main and two of our PSAs, Mrs Cooper and Mrs Sim.
We use our phoneme knowledge and developing understanding of reading and writing rules to construct sentences using our phonics words.
We are learning our spelling sounds and digraphs by using them in sentences. We discuss what we need for a good sentence and then construct it using out openers, connectives and punctuation.
Dienes, or base ten blocks, are named after the mathematician Zoltán Pál Dienes. They are great resources for mathematical understanding, carrying out calculation and learning about place value and decomposition of numbers. Here some learners are using them to halve amounts and are building their ideas of fractions and progressing towards large multiplication and division calculations.
Our learners are preparing for their presentation on Friday. Dyslexic learners learn best, and are taught best, when they know their strengths and needs and teachers understand dyslexia.
Several of our dyslexic learners are working on the Understanding Dyslexic Thinking course delivered by Aberdeen City's Dyslexia Outreach Service and Abbotswell staff. They are learning about successful individuals with dyslexia, their own dyslexic strengths and challenges, and supports they can use.
Learners learn best when they are responsible for their own learning. Our reading groups know what levels they are on and discuss what they need to do to progress towards success. Here a group have made a reading contract which they have signed and comitted themselves to.
Well done to our Meerkat Marvels for the term so far! Lily and Jessica. They have earned this award for working hard and focusing on their learning.
We are combining learning about good sentences (punctuation, finger spaces, capital letters) with our spelling words. Check in every Thursday to see how we progress!
