Book Scavenger Hunt and Visit - Thursday 15.01.26
Room 2 are having a visit from the charity 'Nil by Mouth' for the book 'Neeps and Tatties'. Neeps and Tatties is written in Scots and is all about kindness and understanding.
On the morning of the visit, some copies of the book will have been hidden on the routes to school - in bushes, at bus stops, on fences. Keep an eye out for them and if you find a copy, it's yours to keep!
In class we will enjoy a reading of the story and some activities.

We have now introduced all of the single sounds in Jolly Phonics set 4.
This week in class we will recap all of these sounds, work on identifying words beginning with these sounds and revise our letter formation.

We have now introduced all of the single alphabet sounds. 'q' is taught as a digraph with 'qu' rather than as a single sound as it always appears as 'qu' in English words.

P1 - go on a shape scavenger hunt. How many squares, triangles, circles and rectangles can you find around your house? Maybe challenge your grown ups or brothers and sisters to see who can find the most!
P2 - counting in 2's 5's and 10s
In our CLIC and numeracy lessons we have been working on counting forwards and backwards in 2's, 5's and 10's.
Have a go at practising this. I will share some links to videos and activities to help.
Some of us have started linking this skill to multiplication and are beginning to understand that:

Coconut multiples - Hit play game, choose multiples to 10 and then select if you want to do 2's, 5s or 10s. You then have to hit all of the coconuts that have a number you can count to when counting up in that number.

Gather some snow in small cups or bowls.
Challenge yourself to melt some as fast as possible and keep some frozen for as long as possible.
Keep one bowl as a control - how long does that take to melt on its own?
What method melted the snow the fastest?
What did you try to keep the snow frozen? How long did it stay frozen for?
Share anything interesting you learn!

P1 - We will be consolidating the single sounds we have learned and spending some time working on blending sounds together to read words. We will then begin to look at digraphs.
P2 - We will continue to developing our blending skills and common word knowledge. We will continue stage 2 spelling starting with the final vowel sounds that work with magic e.
As a class we will collaboratively focus on poetry - acrostic and concrete, labels, menus, descriptions and reports!
P1 will have 3 drawing club lessons per week and P2 will continue to have 3 CYPIC writing lessons per week.

P1 - We will work on addition and number bonds within 10, subtractions and beginning to explore counting with larger numbers.
P2 - We are going to be working with numbers to 100 and thinking about more/ less, between, odd and even and counting in multiples. We will also introduce multiplication with physical resources.
Our maths topics are chance and uncertainty, expressions and equations and fractions, decimals and percentages. We will also do a brief introduction to money with P1.
HWB
We will focus on courage, looking on the bright side and emotions!
We will also be learning about food health with plans to have a visit from some local chefs in Aberdeen to discuss this with us. We will also be discussing physical health alongside Mrs Forbes and Fran in PE and Rads

We started with a really fun game of Wizards, Giants and Dwarves and then we enjoyed playing together.

Our P2's have been really enjoying Cypic Daily Writing and have been motivated, challenged and successful. Here they are working on their 1.1 Punctuation targets:

In science we have been learning all about plants. We have learned about how plants live and grow and we have learned about the different parts of plants.
P1s worked on a cutting and sticking task where they had to identify the different parts of a flower and stick them in the correct order.
P2s had to identify and label the different parts of a flower and a tree.
The whole class worked so hard and enjoyed this science topic!

At RADs this week we were developing our football skills. We worked on moving around the gym with the ball under control, using tiny kicks. We also worked on being 'sensational stoppers' and 'standing like a footballer'!

Congratulations to our P2 pupils for having their P1 artworks selected for publication in a book!
In P1 the children drew a self portait and Mrs McLaughlin and Miss Smart sent them to Young Artists. The children received a certificate and some stickers and they have the opportunity for their drawing to be featured in a real book!

Today we welcomed the Primary 1 pupils to our class. They enjoyed having some time to explore the classroom and are looking forward to getting to know their P2 classmates.

Literacy
P1 - We will be learning to recognise and form initial phonics sounds:
s, a, t, i, p, n, c/k, e, h, r, m, d
P2 - We will be developing our blending skills and common word knowledge. We will begin stage 2 spelling and learn the following sounds:
oo, ee, sh, ch, th, ng, qu
As a class we will collaboratively focus on Biographies and Diaries and Narrative writing !
Numeracy
P1 - We will be learning to recognise, use and correctly form numbers within 10. We will also practice counting and using larger numbers.
P2 - We will consolidate our number knowledge within 20, work with number lines to add and subtract and move towards working with larger numbers.
Our maths topics are 2D and 3D shape, patterns and relationships and Maths Week Scotland will be from 22.09.25-28.09.25 where the theme is 'Wild Maths'!
HWB
We will focus on mental health and wellbeing and our emotions!
