Today our class was visited from students from the high school Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU) program. This annual program trains high school student mentors to teach younger students about the dangers of smoking and vaping and encouraging them to make healthy choices. Click here for pictures from this lesson. I'd encourage you to follow up with your child about what they learned today.
It's time to schedule spring conferences. At Page, we do student-led conferences in the spring. This means you need to sign up for a time when your child will come with you to the classroom to help lead the conference! All conferences will be held in person, with one conference time per family.
Conferences will last roughly 20 minutes, with your child leading the first 10 minutes and me leading the last 10 minutes. You will notice on the sign up sheet that I schedule them every 10 minutes. There will often be more than 1 family in the classroom at a time. You will get started alone with your child, and I may be sitting with another family. I will join you when your child finishes the portion they prepared.
Student-led conferences are a great opportunity for students to reflect on their learning, take ownership of their schoolwork, and work with their parents and teachers to set goals. This is always a positive experience for our Page families.

Our field trip will be March 30th. Click here for the information letter that was sent home. The $8 field trip fee was due today! Please send this in at your earliest convenience. Thank you!
Halfway through Battle, and so many kids finished their first book this week! I am so proud of their efforts. Keep up the reading!
We continued Chapter 8: Adding & Subtracting Fractions this week. Click here for a parent letter explaining what is taught in this chapter.
This week we learned how to write fractions greater than 1 as both improper fractions and mixed numbers. Next week we will add and subtract mixed numbers.
Here are some visuals to help you understand what we are learning in class:
Essential Question: How do advances in technology improve our lives?
Reading Strategy: Make Predictions
Reading Skills: Narrator's Point of View, Character's Perspective, Setting
Vocabulary Skill: Synonyms & Context Clues
We finished our government unit this week by studying the rights and responsibilities of citizens. We learned about the Bill of Rights and our freedoms found in the 1st Amendment. We had a great discussion about times when freedom of speech should be limited. I was proud of the kids for voicing their opinions on certain issues and listening to the opinions of their classmates. (ex: Should schools restrict certain types of clothing? Should graffiti be protected as free speech).
