We had a great time at our Valentine auction. I was so busy I completely forgot to take pictures...sorry! Thank you to the parents who donated snacks and supplies to make our valentine bags. And thank you for all the treats and cards you provided for your kids to share with the class (and me!) Everyone enjoyed their treats. Enjoy the long weekend. School resumes on Tuesday.

We've had a lot of conversations in class lately centered around these topics. Many of the students are lacking in motivation and effort. I'm getting a lot of missing assignments and students who are way behind on their page goals for Battle of the Books. During whole group lessons, we need frequent reminders to "keep your eyes on the target" AKA be looking where your learning is happening. Focus has been very hard lately. I'd appreciate you checking in with your child and continuing to set high expectations for their schoolwork. This long weekend is a great time for all of us to reset and come back ready to rock!
Is your child on track with their reading? They should be 3/4 of the way through their first book. Each student has a yellow bookmark with weekly page goals to help them stay on pace to finish their first book by the halfway point of the competition (February 23!)
Please prioritize reading Battle books for your child's weekly reading log. In order to receive credit for their book, they also need to complete a "reflection form" tracking their thinking from their reading. This can be completed DURING their reading. Minutes spent working on reflection forms count toward their weekly reading log on their homework!
If your child is struggling with their reading, I'd encourage you to help read the book out loud to them OR have them listen to an audio version of the book while following along. Audio versions of all the books are available FREE on YouTube!
Look for conference sign up information to come home Tuesday when we return to school. Conferences will be the week of March 9. Spring conferences at Page are student-led meaning your child will come with you and will be in charge of leading about half of their conference. You will need to sign up for a time when you and your child can come together.
On Feb. 27 our class will have students from TKHS visit to present the Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU) program. This annual program trains high school student mentors to teach younger students about the dangers of smoking and vaping and encouraging them to make healthy choices.
Save the date- our next field trip is to Lansing! We'll visit our state capitol and the Michigan History Museum on March 30! We will need parent chaperones to attend, so make plans now to join us!
We began Chapter 8: Adding & Subtracting Fractions this week. Click here for a parent letter explaining what is taught in this chapter.
Here are some visuals to show you the skills being taught in class:
Essential Question: Why do we need a government?
Reading Strategy: Ask & Answer Questions
Reading Skills: Cause & Effect, Headings & Pronunciation, Homophones & Homographs
Vocabulary Skill: Latin Roots
We began our government unit this week. We focus mostly on our national government and then discuss how our state government functions in a very similar way on a smaller scale. This unit culminates with our field trip to the state capitol to see government in action.
