This week students learned about multiplication as comparison (ex: 24 is 3 times as many as 8) and how to solve multiplication comparison versus addition/subtraction comparison word problems. Next we learned how to multiply by powers of 10 (ex: 3x8=24, 3x80=240) etc. We applied this concept in 2 ways:
Estimation- We want students to use rounding to get a quick estimate in their head. This is an important "number sense" skill for students to check their work and make sure their answer is reasonable.
Expanded form and Area Model methods of multiplication
Here's what we learned this week:
Essential Question: How can people make a difference in their community?
Reading Strategy: Reread
Reading Skills: Central Idea & Relevant Details, Text Features: Graphs & Headings, Text Structure: Sequence
Vocabulary Skill: Suffixes
Next week is a "review week" in our curriculum, so we will not have a new list of spelling words (no test next Friday)
We are writing argumentative essays about the skills students will need for jobs in the future. We read 3 sources to gain background information. Then we planned out ideas and learned how to hook our reader and clearly state our claim.
Students are learning to identify and use map features. This week we learned the cardinal and intermediate directions on a compass rose, how to read a map key and map scale, and how to identify locations on a map using lines of latitude and longitude.
